When running with a footpod, is there any way to see what the GPS track distance is to compare?

I run with a Stryd footpod and generally I am very pleased with the accuracy of it.  But sometimes there are those errant runs when the distance doesn't pass the "smell factor" and it seems like it's over distance (never under).  I get a nice GPS track on all runs even though I had speed/distance set to the Footpod "always" in my 945 but it seems like that one of these analysis sites like Strava or TrainingPeaks would be able to show the GPS distance given the track recorded?

  • On Strava you can change reported distance from Stryd to GPS distance by clicking on "correct distance" under Distance.

I use Fit File Repair Tool if I want to check GPS vs Stryd distance. I also think (if I remember correctly) that Golden Cheetah can do the same. Trainingpeaks has no such functionality (as I recall, not even in WKO).

For me Stryd (non-wind version) gives a longer distance when running threshold pace (or higher) and shorter distance when running easy pace (tested on verified track).

Good tip on Strava, I didn't know that, thanks for posting.

  • Okay I just uploaded the tcx file to my Strava account and I don't see any way that I can edit it in the way you described.  Maybe that is a paid-feature?

Interestingly, the run distance did change - Strava is showing it as 11.06m vs the 11.55m that my Garmin shows from the footpod.  So I'm guessing Strava is using GPS instead.

  • So I just went down a bit of a rabbit-hole of sorts...taking multiple running files and uploading them to Strava (I don't autoupload) and checking the distances since it appears Strava uses GPS-only for me.

    - The aforementioned 11.55m run was reduced to 11.06m.  This is a heavily wooded trail run with lots of intricate twists, turns, and hairpins - basically a GPS device's worst nightmare for accuracy.

    - Another trail race that was in the same area but only shared sections with the above run.  It was billed as a 10K but my Stryd measured it as 6.96m whereas Strava shows 6.45m.

    - Finally, another trail run but this one in an almost perfectly straight line with much less tree cover.  It was again billed as a 10K but Stryd measured as 6.41m wheras Strava shows 6.45m (i.e. more).

So originally I was thinking my Stryd was overmeasuring but now the evidence appears to suggest otherwise.  In conditions where GPS struggles, the Stryd reported more distance and was in line with the one run where GPS would be expected to be more accurate.  Further, on all of my road running I never question the distance it records generally.

Don't you have the text "Distance (?)" just under the distance which is a clickable link? Click on that and you have the choice of letting Strava correcting the distance. And the correcting can be undone as well, so no harm in trying it.

  • I do actually now that you mention it, but it wasn't clear it was a link until you brought it up (wasn't colored differently or otherwise).  But I can hover my mouse over it and click but it doesn't do anything, must be a limitation of my version of chrome.  I'll have to try in my iOS app and see what it does there.

  • Here's what mine looks like on Desktop using Chrome:

    No "?" like with yours.

  • For me that situation indicates that I do not have any GPS data for my activity. Like when I have entered a manual activity, or recorded my bike-ride using the speed sensor that records speed and distance but not physical location (GPS).

Do you have a GPS track together with your activities?

  • Do you have a GPS track together with your activities?

    Yes.

  • Maybe then it is actually the fact that you run with a footpod and use that for distance calculation that stops Strava from using the GPS track to re-calculate. It doesn't say so outright in the linked page, but I get the feeling that that might be it. Apart from this, I have no further ideas.
