(solved) TopoActive Europe 2021.10 Maps too big!

the new TopoActive Europe 2021.10 Maps is too big! 9GB?

It's a Forerunner with limited memory. What shoud that? My memory is now completely full.
An MP3 album now only fits on it. Garmin has messed up with this update! The clock has just under 15GB.

  • You are mit on the wrong side, but I must confess from hardware side they are top, but for software they are far below any 3rd world China crop company. I see ist from my old GPSMAP 60 on. And from Management they are pure arrogant - no customer oriented thinking.

  • The release of new maps that are too large is just plain incompetent

No, sorry, you are incompetent. The problem is not the size of the map. Apparently on the Fenix side they found the reason why GE doesn't detect the map is installed already. It has wrong ID.

The map works fine, even if GE says you have update and it doesn't list you having the TopoEurope map. If you get the space error, your map is already updated and your so to speak good to go... Just ignore the new update until Garmin gives the GE to understand the situation or gives update where the ID is fixed.

It has nothing to do with the size of the update.

And I find it annoying to get those kind of rant on stuff that has workarounds or doesn't really affect anything if you would just use the maps.. I would understand this better if the problem would cause problems without workarounds and real effect on your usage of the device.

  • I see some problems of Garmin highlighted with this case:

    1. The verification team at Garmin makes a bad job. That's a matter of fact - They did not fully test the upgrade process with real data. And when I read the similar issue one year ago... even worse!
    2. Garmin does not think it is needed to communicate the case in open and clear words in the Forums and take all wrong and possibly dangerous information down.
    3. And at last, they do not take the Forum as a serious communication line with the customer and to have People in the Forums who act as GARMIN REPRESENTATIVES and who has direct access to Development/Verification and can mitigate these annoying issues in due time.

This three points boils down to the appearance that the end-customer is NOT in the focus of Garmin.

Hey, GARMIN, you run Forums for communication with and between YOUR customer. You pay money for this and your helpdesks. You throw away the money if you neglect this communication and if you do not hear to your customers.

Then they will not look to you any more and go away!

Sorry for this harsh words, but this is the way it looks like.

  • Regarding 2), what pieces of information are potentially dangerous? Thinking

  • That didn't work for me. Thanks anyway, Luca.

  • Check your map version on the watch, chances are you already have the latest map installed (2021.10), and in that case it doesn't really matter what the GE says.

  • I still have TopoActive Europe 2020.20.

Does this new version (2021.10) show topoactive contour lines on the watch itself?

  • No. For contours you will need more detailed map.

    One option is: https://garmin.opentopomap.org

    But there are many others.

  • Thanks, I was jus curious. I already used an extra layer on my previous watch. Just hoped that it is added now.

  • Presume this is the very issue, got this message when I plugged in my watch at work this morning.

"We're unable to install the updates.

The latest version of these maps have so much new information that we're not going to be able to fit it all on your devices internal memory. Please contact Product Support for help with updating your maps."

Then there's a "Contact Us" link to click which takes me to a Garmin page  which says "You seem to be lost" !

I had a look through the watch's config menu but wasn't able to see where I can see the version of the maps installed as thought it did this install last week.
