Speculations about the long delay in updates and new features?

Any thoughts on why Garmin is not providing any updates or patches recently?

5 months ago, myself and other identified a problem with Garmin devices not picking up run cadence properly when a smart trainer is near by. It was acknowledged by Garmin, both in these forums and during a support phone call. While the interim fix is to unplug my smart trainer when using my treadmill, this really is not a long term solution, and this problem never existed prior to the last HUB update.

I have been patiently waiting for Garmin to fix this, but I am not starting to get concerned with their lack up updates.

Many other are waiting/wanting feature updates and other fixes (Jaybird headphones as one example)

My only guess is perhaps they are focusing on a replacement model, but it sure would be nice if they would at least fix problems they have introduced.

It could be covid related. A lot of companies are working with skelton crews and sales may be down due to covid and that could affect department funding.  But as you say, it's only speculation until Garmin says something official.

  • Some recent speculation can be found from: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-945/260555/not-a-955-but-945-lt

And your guess is the same as mine. It seems there's some "drop everything and get this production ready first" happening. But we'll be smarter in a month or two.

  • I don’t believe its Covid related. I believe the top 3 business branches are medics, logistics and sports tech. Did you try to buy a bike/trainer/equipment the last year? The good stuff is either sold out in minutes or sold at MSRP (wich is uncommon here in Germany).

Software development nowadays is the perfect example how to get rid of personal contacts while working at full efficiency.

I think, the team for the Forerunner 945 is shrunk down to a minimum and the devs are working on other projects now. Also, the Fenix 7 will take a lot of Ressourcen because the Fenix line is the cash cow. There are some rumours of the CIQ 4 devices appearing in a short time wich will be a complete new software base.

Yes, I tried to buy lots of items that were difficult to obtain, but this doesn't mean sales are up.  It's most likely due to supply and demand because there are less people working in manufacturing, warehouses, shipping, inspections, etc. because of covid restrictions.  Like I said, just speculating, just my opinion.

Maybe in Germany, but in the US I would say medical, logistics and public service (police, fire, social services).  People have restrictions in public gyms, but the demand for at-home sports equipment isn't skyrocketing.  I work in the communications field and my work has a higher demand because everyone needs fiber and higher internet speeds because they're working from home and/or schooling is online. Even home landlines are making a comeback because some have restrictions on their cell phones.

  • There was a huge surge in demand in the UK for anything exercise-related, as soon as lockdowns came into effect and people were told they could only go outside to workout. Turbo trainers, treadmills... suddenly everyone became a runner or cyclist Blush

I don't doubt there was a higher demand at some level anywhere or everywhere.  But this doesn't necessarily mean sales soared.  They might have initially, but once stocks were depleted people have to wait because production, shipping, etc. was slowed due to covid.  It's not like our governments/municipalities said everyone stay home and be safe, accept those in the sporting industry because demand is high.  :)

  • From DCRainmaker's post on the 745:

Of course, there’s one item that was slated to be added in, which was the advanced sleep tracking. Essentially that was a switchover from Garmin sleep tracking to ones powered by FirstBeat algorithms (which, Garmin acquired about a year ago). This change was rolled out to the Fenix 6 (and the FR945 in public beta builds), but then paused for other devices due to issues Garmin ran into. They’ve spent the last 8 months working through those issues, and it sounds like things are about set. We saw the Garmin Enduro have it included a couple months ago, largely because that shares the same codebase as the Fenix 6, so it kinda had to go along for the ride. In talking with Garmin recently, it sounds like things are basically cleared for the FR745 to get it soon, but they didn’t want to commit to an exact day – other than to confirm the 745/945 are indeed definitely getting it.

  • Yeah, Garmin said (and DCR too) that Epix will get Running Dynamics v2 (because Fenix3 got it and it was that same platform - epix has even more proccesing power). And what? nothing. So i never belive in promisses. Just dont get high hopes.

  • Just facts. Main SW lifetime was increased from 1-2 month(s) to 3-4 months since 4.40 at 2020-04-07.
