Because the "many watches today" you refer to are mostly employing OLED screen technology, which by its nature consumes a lot more power than the Memory-in-pixel (MIP) display tech used in watches like the 945. Very few Garmins use OLED screens and those that do have this power saving "screen off" feature you speak of. This is why I hope that the serious sports devices don't move to OLED screens - they currently don't need to turn off the display to save power.

Unless they manage to keep the battery usage low and the time between recharging long. For me that would be at least one week of 24/7 with around 15hrs of GPS use.
