By the fenix 6 solar or FR 955?

Hi,

im considering buying fenix 6 solar. I just had the 6s and found it to be a bit too small (160mm wrist). So, I was going to order fenix 6 solar but I heard that it will come with the same screen as fenix 6 and released within April. Is this true and would you buy fr or fenix?

  • rumours, rumours... who can say it's true? Likely, but who's going to know other than Garmin? Joy

  • Haha yeah true. That’s why I wounded if someone knows for sure that they never release after April, the 045 line that is.

  • Look at the forerunner wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garmin_Forerunner

    There isn’t a clear pattern.

  • 955? Nobody even knows if it exists, despite of what you read online. For now it's just fake news.

  • I think there is people who know. but can't comment. If 955 is coming next month, it's most probably already on reviewers hands.

Last beta firmware was 2 months ago, after that they have said that we are getting Trail Running VO2max, but no new beta. I would guess that the team is busy with 955 firmware.

But this time I won't probably be the first one to upgrade and wait for the possible summer Fenix update, if I would change the camp to Fenix side as it's getting more love from Garmin than Forerunner and their lifestyle watch has more sports features than their best Sports&Fitness watch :(

If we get new beta soon, before 955 release, it would in my opinion add doubt to 955 release, but for now I'm feeling like 955 is coming April and Fenix in the summer. Also Covid can mix things up and add delays.

Elbo, the pattern is pretty clear 2 years after they changed from 3 year cycle and started using round watches.

A 2 year gap between the 935 and 945 isn't a pattern. If we were to jump into the future and the 955 was released the spring of 2021, the 965 spring of 2023, etc., that would be a pattern.  There's nothing repetitive in your example to show a pattern.

  • Well, at the moment we don't know the release date of 955. It might break that or it might not. But looking at historical data on FR 900-series:

    910XT 04/10/2011
    920XT 01/10/2014
    935 29/03/2017
    945 30/04/2019

    9X0XT was released on october.
9X5 has been released on march or april.

I have no reason to think that the next 9X5 is not released on march or april, based on that. Yes, it might break the pattern that you don't think exists, but then it breaks, until it's released both previous 9X5 is released on spring. Of course it is just n=2. If then we look at 2 or 3 years, it has been before 3 years, but then the trend is always 6 months faster, so on that trend 955 should have already come half a year go. As that didn't happen, I think guessing 2 years, is better than guessing 2,5 or 3 years.

As induction 935 was released on spring 2017 (n=0), 945 was released on spring 2019 (n=k), so hypothesis is that 955 is released on spring 2021 (n=k+1), and if it's released on spring 2021, then that theory hold true and every next model is released on spring+2y ;)

But as we don't know this is pointless, I think there is clearly a case it to be this spring. In couple of months we are smarter about is there a new FR.

Yes, it might break the pattern that you don't think exists

It's not that I don't think a pattern exists, I know for a fact a pattern doesn't exist.  By definition of the word pattern you need at least three events, and the 2nd event must be equal or the same between event 1 and 2 and between events 2 and 3 to be defined as a pattern. Their isn't even a pattern of springtime releases. You're correct in saying we don't know when the 955 will be released, but your incorrect in saying it might break the pattern since a pattern doesn't exist.  If it is released in April then you can say a two year springtime release pattern has been started.

  • Sorry, don't want to nag about it or discourage you. The FR955 will be a great watch certainly. Just not at the time of release. For I dont know how many years now each and every Garmin product required at least one year to mature sufficiently to receive a recommendation. And I do not only mean software but ALSO hardware. My lesson learned is to wait at least 1.5 years after release and then buy a wonderful, mature and reliable product where all of the nasty quirks have been ironed out. Just my opinion, but it was well proven over time.

  • In a Garmin leak it said it was supposed to come out last year, but the pandemic changed plans.
Whether there is a pattern or not, there are other companies coming on strong as coros, so it requires faster releases and news to stay on top of the market.
