Forerunner 945 and Garmin Edge 530

Hi All,

I hope you are well! I recently decided to do an Ironman next year and so picked myself up a Garmin 945 coming from an apple watch. I am wearing both currently as quite simply, I love my AW and only got the Garmin for workouts (although body battery is cool).

Anyway from what I have read on forums and anywhere I can find it, syncing between the 530 and 945 for workout loads and similar is just not really a thing for some odd reason. As such I currently use my 945 for running and when available again swimming and my Edge 530 for biking.

As I am following a training plan structured workouts are the main thing I do hence why I want to use the 530 as it gives me everything I need right in front of my eyes. However I am not sure if the data from this will impact a) my body battery on the watch and B) I know it does not then link up to overall recovery time and training load.

So I wanted to seek some advice from you all. Which of the following options would be best for avoiding duplication, but ensuring my watch/ garmin has everything I need to track recovery WHILE still getting the data I would want to review such as per lap power and HR.

1. Use 530 while NOT wearing the watch and let it sync the data. Simple, easy but not sure if it impacts body battery or overall training load.

2. Use 530 while wearing the watch passively. Only one workout is then recorded but I worry this may cause duplication on my activity load/ stress on the watch and again same issue with training load.

3. Record with both the 945 and 530 and delete one. I have heard of this one a few times but not sure on a couple of things. a) I do not want my watch to be a structured workout since it will be out of sync with the 530 AND would require me to look at the watch while cycling for my data such as targets. b) If I only have the structured workout on the 530 and keep the 945 version then I will not have the per lap data. c) if I delete the 945 data and save the 530 data will the overall activity recorded on the 945 impact my training load and body battery - If this happens then this is ideal but I fear deleting the activity will result in the training effect and load both being deleted 2 and then it is basically just option 1 again.

These are the three I can think of but if you have anything better I am happy to know. Thanks for your support on this relatively long post. I am new to garmin as mentioned but will always love apple. I am trying to use it all day alongside the AW but if the data will never be perfect due to the above I question the benefits of wearing it all day.

Thanks again

Josh

  • Hi Josh,

Because of this article, What is Physio TrueUp? , I use an 830 to record my cycling activities, as you put it I wear my watch passively, (Smartwatch mode, Not During Activity etc.). This allows me to maintain my health and wellness tracking from my watch, but training load is shared between the Edge and the watch.

    Hope that helps,

    Brooks

  • Hi Brooks,

Interesting, everywhere I had read these did not sync properly. Perhaps I need to do that weird Edge sync before activity but I shall keep an eye on it.

    Thank you for your suggestion.

  • I have no problems with Physio True Up between my watch and 530.

I do sync my 530 before each ride - this is partly to get the weather forecast onto the device, which can affect heat acclimation and VO2Max predictions, but it also has the advantage of ensuring Training Load on all devices is from a common starting point.

I wear the watch passively while riding (with Activity Tracking and Move IQ on). I only record rides on the watch for epic rides where I would be gutted if it didn't save - I record on both, and then discard the ride on the watch once I can see the Edge has saved successfully.

  • Thanks for this!

Perhaps this explains why most of the forums were a bit older if it is working now. To clarify I need to sync both the watch and Edge before a workout on either device to ensure they are lined up. Does this have to be right before each ride or is it okay if they have just both been synced at some point in between activities?

    Thanks!

  • I have been using FR645M + edge 130 as Brooks says for 2 years and it has always worked perfectly, since November I have switched to 945 but I have not started cycling yet, on Saturday I will try.

  • You will not want to record activities with both devices (if they are both recording a HR) as this will give you a training load for each device.  You can delete the activity to prevent duplicate time/miles.... BUT, this will not remove the Training Load from Garmin Connect!!!

Similar to when someone has a faulty HR reading of 190-220bpm for an entire easy hour activity and it gives huge Aerobic Training Effect , Training Load , and high intensity load... you delete the activity and manually create the time/distance... but it won't remove/reset your training status and load!!!

Shouldn't be that way... but it is

  • You can broadcast your watch screen to the 530, so the watch could drive the structured workout and you just see what it's telling you to do on the 530. I played with that once but never really had the need so can't be sure it helps.
