SW 6.20 upgrade - BLE Speed Sensor reading not working

After the 6.20 SW upgrade my bike ride presents rather funny with a distance of ZERO kilometers. The distance field remains unchanged. I first thought the battery of the BLE Polar speed sensor had given up but that is not so. It connects fine to the watch and I can trigger the sensor with the wheel magnet (red LED flashes). I tried removing the sensor from the watch and re-discovering it. It does display a speed reading but the distance field remains at zero no matter what. I tried both setting the wheel size manually and to AUTO but the result doesn't change.

I hope folks at Garmin are aware of the problem and a fix is in the works since I really like my BLE speed and cadence sensors on my bikes.

Avoid hope and contact Garmin Support directly.

Suggest you also check with the Polar forums...

  • Will certainly do this first thing tomorrow morning. It's strange that no one else saw this until now. Maybe weather isn't making folks ride their bikes much. I was lucky that I did a ride the day before the upgrade (all well) and then a day after (not good). So it is absolutely the 6.20 upgrade.

What's more is that Garmin "prefers" Ant+ and states that BLE sometimes doesn't transmit all data properly. Let's hope they don't use this as an OUT since I do also like my BLE sensors and want to continue to use them

  • I use foot pod ble Zwift and it also works in 6.20

  • Quick update: This is all happening in a biking profile. Both the speed and the cadence BLE sensors connect (according to the watch status screens) and report their serial and battery status NEW. The speed sensor produces a "current speed" when I wave a magnet in front of it. Distance remains at zero and the speed plot remain flat. The cadence plot is missing altogether. I also noticed the sensor icons are flashing before I start the activity. I seem to remember that they were not doing that before but I'm not sure

A closer look at the FIT files pre- and post upgrade shows two BLE entries in the DEVICE_INFO category in V5.50 and these entries are not showing in V6.20 - that seems wrong and probably is the reason the RECORDS category in the FIT file post-upgrade is missing three entries.

    V5.50 - RECORDS
    timestamp
    position_lat(°)
    position_long(°)
    distance(m)
    enhanced_speed(m/s)
    enhanced_altitude(m)
    heart_rate(bpm)
    cadence(rpm)
    temperature(C)
    fractional_cadence(rpm)

    V6.60 - RECORDS
    timestamp
    position_lat(°)
    position_long(°)
    distance(m)
    enhanced_altitude(m)
    heart_rate(bpm)
    temperature(C)

I opened a ticket with Garmin Product Support and submitted all information and files and hope they'll be able to reproduce the issue with BLE sensors and resolve this in the next upgrade.

  • I also have an update: today I did a 20 km run, the foot pod was always connected but for 9 times the instantaneous rhythm gave incorrect values as if there was no sensor connected (we all know that the rhythm instantaneous with GPS is not reliable with Garmin), after some time fluctuations everything is back to normal until the next error and so for the whole race. I am not as capable of analyzing fit files as Ingo.

  • am experiencing this now at this moment..

    2 rides.of 40km and 50km.. all showed up 0.1 to 0.7km

is there anything i can do to reset this?
