Heart rate reading is fine whilst running/hiking, but all of a sudden incorrect whilst weight training

My 45  is reading heart rate and kcals fine as it always has during running and hiking, getting around 140/180bpm

When im doing weight training it used to read 120/140bpm

But now ive noticed it only gets to about 45/50bpm, i know for sure that that is not right, im not a world class athlete ha, any idea why its fine on one activity but no longer correct om the other?

I do change the excersize function to match the type of excersize im doing but it never made a differemce before but the past couple of weeks like i say it doesnt like the gym/fitness fumction Thinking

  • Weight training is difficult for wrist-based optical sensors. I think you have two options for accuracy.

1 - Chest strap heart rate monitor

    2 - Optical armband monitor

  • Which kind of training did you choose? I created an own one once which I wanted to use for weight training (but with a different name), and heartrate monitoring was really bad. I then used the built-in Weight Training (and still do), and it works just fine. My assumption is that I did not configure my custom training correctly, and maybe it read the heartrate with a lower resolution (i.e., less measurements per time unit), but I never checked.

  • Thanks for the reply i will lool into it, just puzzled as it was floorless at first annd then just seemed to not be reading it properly for no reason,

    Thanks again though

  • I just chose the built in, gym/excersize option which worked fine at first and then just decided to stop accuratley working,

Ive kept away from creating my own, its just a bit puzzling as to why ot all of a sudden stopped working,

Thanks anyway though for the imput, i appreciate it

  • its just a bit puzzling as to why ot all of a sudden stopped working,

    Most likely because of this:

Additionally, heart rate is calculated differently for each activity type. Make sure you use the activity type that matches the activity being done. For example, using the Elliptical app while running outdoors could result in incorrect HR being recorded.

And because every FW includes this:

    • Other minor improvements and bug fixes.

Why Garmin calculates HR differently using the oHRM depending on activity chosen is beyond me.  So, it's possible they "tweaked" something in the last update even if you selected the correct activity.  Another reason why the oHRM should only be used for 24/7 monitoring and a chest strap should be worn for every and any activity being recorded if you want accurate results.  For those who don't want to wear a strap, you'll have to accept the fact you'll have inaccurate headings from time to time and from one activity to the other, and Garmin may change something that might have been working well for you in the past and no longer does so.
