Works for me as well, but is highly dependent on your geographical location. There is an app called GNSS View that has a satellite position radar. This displays current and in time projected positions of all satellites in your area. Select Galileo or GLONASS for your Garmin device based on the number of satellite available to you. By rule of thumb, the system with the most satellites available to you will probably give you better and quicker reception.
Thanks, I'd never heard of GNSS View. I downloaded it. For my location, GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo have an approximately equal number of satellites visible at all times for my location. Yet, given this fact, Galileo is noticeably faster to lock than GLONASS. I can get a Galileo lock in a matter of seconds, whereas GLONASS can take upwards of a minute. Wikipedia claims that GLONASS is preferable for higher latitudes, but I'm not sure if that's what influences lock time or not.

Signal strength influences how long it takes to get a good fix. Another app you may want to try if you're using Android is GPS Test. It not only shows how many and which types of satellites are available, but their signal strength which is color coded. So, 4 green GLONASS satellites may be better than 6 yellow Galileo satellites.
