Accuracy of distance measure when walking.

Hi there,

My girlfriend has a Garmin Forerunner 945.

I have a Garmin Approach S62.

When we both set our watches to walk - we get different distances.

For example this morning we walked 1:04 and according to my watch we walked 5.17 km and according to hers 4.28 km - this even though we started & stopped our watches at the same time and walked together the whole way.

We get a large differential every time.

Appreciate any assistance in fixing this.

  • Start by comparing the tracks on the maps. Do you see any obvious reasons to why there is almost 1 km difference?

You didn't mention if you waited for green GPS status before you started the activity. There has also been some major issues with the GPS in at least FR945 after New Year's Eve which was solved today, but I still had some issues this morning and had to wait a little longer before I got a good GPS position even after the green GPS status. So, using the results from today to compare is not a good idea.

Do a test and wait a few minutes longer after the green GPS status before you start the activity. FR945 got maps so you can easily see when the GPS got the correct position. I always use the map and wait for the position to be correct before I start the activity.
