Do I need a Windows/Mac PC/laptop to get the full experience of the FR 945? (Linux/Android user)

Hi there, 

I am planning to buy a FR 945, but before I would like to know if not having a Windows/Mac PC or Laptop will negatively affect my experience with this watch. I am a Linux user and already found that Garmin does not officially supports Linux. I also have a an Android Smartphone.

Will the Android apps on my phone, the web access through Linux and the basic USB storage through Linux be sufficient to exploit all of the watch features? Or there is any feature which needs the usage of a Windows/Mac app on the PC? Which features would be those?

    Android is even better than iOS because you can use quick replies for messages. 

    Garmin Connect Website is (in my eyes) superior to the app, but the App is good enough for most users. Synch via WiFi and BT is working fine. 

    GArmin Express is only needed to update the maps. If you update apps, widgets or datafields, it will mess up your settings (in my experience). If you are able to run Express in wine and update only the maps, you are fine with Linux. Android is perfect.

    It shouldn't alter it too much. You wouldn't be able to use Garmin Express on your pc since it is only for Windows and Mac, however, Garmin connect on Andriod will work fine as a way to sync your watch with Garmin and view your data. I like using Garmin express as a fast way to receive updates to the watch, but you should still be able to receive them through the Garmin Connect app on your phone as long as you have auto-updates turned on, on the watch. You can also use any web browser to log into Garmin Connect online and access a few more data stuff there. I wouldn't say that express is necessary, but it might make some things easier such as looking at storage, and certain profile settings. Someone else may be able to second this but you should be able to do fine with the Garmin connect on Andriod, using Garmin connect through a browser, and simply using the watch interface. The USB port on the pc will also allow you to charge your device. If you do find yourself in need of Garmin express you could always try setting up a virtual machine.

    Yes, this lack of Linux support for Garmin Express is a bit concerning. I wonder if it's possible to use Express via a compatibility layer such as WINE?

    It is recommended to use Garmin Express from time to time. The reason is you can download new maps updates. the other thing is the GPS fix it is much better when you sync before with garmin express. I installed wine and garmin express is working.

    The .expo file for fast GPS fix is also actualised via the mobile I think. The main point for Express will be the quarterly map updates.
