Suggested Workout is not smart enough. It overestimated my fitness.

This morning was the first time I tried to follow the suggested workout.

To complete a base run at 5:20 min/km for 54 min. Expected aerobic load = 2.4 (if I recall correctly).

I know this is not a correct base pace for me. But I just gave a try and here are my training stats:

Average HR = 165 (zone 3, my max HR = 199)

Aerobic load = 4.2

Exercise load = 198

Benefit = Tempo

My question is, despite countless of recorded activities, why does Garmin not learn about my fitness correctly?

Just a little bit of background.

My PB of 10 km is 42 min recorded during my peak fitness. So when I use the following calculator, the website suggested me to do easy run (base) at 5:10 min/km.

So basically, Garmin has used the same formula or algorithm as above to calculate my base run. Note my current fitness is slightly lower than peak (8 months back).

  • Do you have running VO2max from the last weeks?

    Did your Training Status & VO2max showed that you lost fitness after that training?

  • Since 2 months I run nearly each day with the suggested workout and the TE aerobic prognosis and what I recorded match quite well.

    But since 1 week the suggestions are very hard for me and bring me to my limit. Never experienced that with normal Garmin Coach Training Plans.

  • Yes I do have running vo2max from last few weeks.

    I had a flu prior to doing the one time daily suggested workout. So yes my vo2max did decline from a peak of 58 to 56 now.

    So I don't think the fitness decline is due to the suggested workout.
