My Forerunner 945 counts too many steps

Hi All,

This is my first post here, I am new with Garmin watches and forums. and I hope you can help.

10 days ago I have received my Forerunner 945, I am very excited about it, I like everything about it, all the features and metrics and most importantly the long battery life and surprisingly very comfortable to wear.

I am impressed with the advance features of the watch however I have noticed that my watch is doing the most basic thing very wrongly, the step count on my watch is counting far too many steps than it should be.

I have been wearing many fitness watches and bands (such as Samsung Galaxy active, Galaxy Fit2 and most recently Amazon Halo and many others), All those devices from the cheapest to the most expensive give logical step count with the amount of movement I am doing through the day, and they are all giving comparable step counts with a maximum range of +- 500 steps.

My Forerunner 945, on the other hand, gives far too many steps, even while staying at home the whole day. sometimes I wake up in the morning and it already counts more than 1500 steps. so I did a test with other fitness bands I have and found that all other counted about 5000 steps but my Forerunner 945 counted 8300 steps, this is a 3300 extra steps!!!

I did software reset but did not work.

Kindly advise if anyone else having such issue with your Forerunner 945 and if there is anything I can do to fix the issue.

It is really frustrating to have such advance and mazing watch but cannot count the most basic step count accurately.

Thank you,

  • Note: I think my watch is also not logging sleep accurately, adding hours of extra time while I was actually awake in bed before actually sleep.

  • I always have to adjust my sleep by a little to make sure it is right, but if you go to bed at a consistent time you can set up a bedtime and wake time to help Garmin it closer. Follow these steps

    1. Open the Garmin Connect Mobile application
      • Android - Touch the menu icon (3 horizontal lines in the upper left corner)
      • iOS – Touch the ‘More’ icon (bottom right)
    2. Touch Settings
    3. Touch User Settings
    4. Edit your "Bed Time" or "Wake Time"
    5. Touch the back button when finished

I would also make sure you have set up your Garmin connect app all the way and make sure it is synced with the watch.

You can also follow the advice here on how to set up a custom stride length to make sure that your step count is more accurately reflected.

Finally, just give it some more time and try doing a couple of activities with it, as it is still adjusting to you.

  • Thanks Parker for the reply. I tried your suggestions but it didn't work for me. Still steps and sleep tracking are way off compared to other fitness trackers. Other fitness trackers track much more accurately out of the box. I don't want to tell my watch when I went to sleep and when I woke up every day...

I noticed that my watch counts hundreds/thousand steps while showering and washing my hands. Why other trackers I have are just smarter and do not count those movements as steps...
