Footpod Pace Problem

I recently got a NPE Runn treadmill sensor and installed in on my treadmill. My first run using it was on Zwift on my Ipad so I was connected to Runn via BT. This all worked great, but of course, Garmin connect imports the workout from Zwift but will not assign any training effect, impact, etc.

So for my next Zwift run, I connected Runn to my 945 via ANT+ as a foot pod. I didn't look at the 945 screens during the run, but the auto Km buzzes on my 945 were in sync with the Km markers on Zwift, so I assumed it was being recording fine on the 945. When I looked at the 945 run on Garmin connect, the distance and average pace is correct, but I get a really strange and incorrect graph for the pace.

I reset the RUNN, did a 20 second reset on my 945 and tried it again with the same results. I removed the RUNN footpod and re-added it, but the same result. I have opened a ticket with NPE as I thought it was a problem with my RUNN.

However, today, I was doing a Zwift run again, and I decided to use my Garmin footpod instead of Runn. (I still used Runn via BT to my Ipad for Zwift.) During the run, I noticed that my instant pace was 0 and once in a while a number would flash on the screen. Once again, the pace graph on Garmin connect is messed up and does not represent anything close to the actual pace.

Anyone else seeing anything like this on indoor runs with a footpod connected via ANT+?

Any suggestions? (A complete reset of my 945 is my last option, and in past experiences never fixes anything)

I have the latest firmware (5.50) and ANT/BLE (6.11) and Hub Sensor (7.02). The only extra software on the 945 is Garmin Running Power. No other watch faces, apps, widgets.

The other ANT+ channels (Strap HR and Garmin Dynamic Pod) do seem fine however. Very strange.

  • Just in case anyone from Garmin is following this or if anyone else experiences this problem.

I have determined what is causing the footpod pace problems on my 945 and I can now cause this and correct this reliably and repeatedly.

For 4 years, my WaHoo Kickr (2016) has sat beside my treadmill. The Kickr is always plugged in, therefore it is always broadcasting regardless if it is being used or not, and I have the Kickr connected as a smart trainer to my 945 via ANT+. As soon as I remove power to the Kickr the footpod instant pace starts reporting correctly and the pace graph reverts to normal.

I have checked treamill runs prior to the last ANT/BLE update and can confirm from examining the fit file that both the footpod and Kickr were connected via ANT+, and the pace was fine. I suspect that that  a recent Garmin update for ANT/BLE or Hub Sensor has caused this problem.

I have opened a case with Garmin Support.

  • interesting!  thanks for the update!  When I started using Stages Spin bike at gym with power on my new 945... was awesome, then I would often run on Treadmill after 15+yards away.

Often it would display "Power Connected" in the first few minutes or running!!!?!?!???  But, luckily never seemed to mess with my cadence/pace info or add any sort of weird Power data to my activity.

Are you using a datafield/widget or anything to pull in the Slope to your watch also?  How you like the RUNN?  I was thinking of trying to get one maybe

  • I am currently using Zwift on my Ipad as the primary recording method for treadmill runs. This captures the slope data automatically. However, I do want to capture it on the 945 as well so that Training Effect updated which is why I capture it on the 945. I have not tried any data field/widget to pull the slope into the 945.

I like the Runn. It certainly reports a different pace/speed than my treadmill does, and it is even different than my calibrated Garmin footpod. I think the cadence reported by Runn is a little off, but its close. The biggest challenge I had with Runn was getting the reflective stickers to stick to the treadmill belt. I ended up using some heavy duty double sided tape which is quite soft and squishy, I stuck that to the belt and then applied the reflective sticker to the tape. No issues since doing that.

  • Just shy of 7 months since Garmin introduced this problem with an ANT+/BLE update……..I wonder if they are ever gonna fix it?

does anyone else think Garmin development and support has really gone down hill in 2021?
