935 vs 945 vs vivoactive 3

Would like some advice.  I have a garmin vivoactive 3 and my heart rate strap has bitten the dust.  I am torn between buying a new strap or upgrading to a fenix six or forerunner 935/945.  Any advice would be appreciated.   Are the wrist HRm now accurate enough without a chest strap.

  • The wrist HRM is not accurate !

HRM strap is better for all the Garmin products.

Al least if you are a serius sporter

  • I have found the OHRM pretty good, for intervall training you need an strap for regulair runs you will be fine to be honest.

  • This is unpopular but for me OHR is just spot-on. I use both wrist OHR and Garmin dual HR strap and found no differences. However this is an ancient discussion, for some people OHR doesn't work, for others it is fine... Not necessarily because something's wrong with watch.

  • I had both. I had VA3 as an intermediate device before an upgrade for my old Fenix 3 was available. I liked it a lot, I even got used to the touch display.

If the only reason of the upgrade was OHR - dont :), IMHO both devices have similar OHR quality, F945 is a little better after recent firmware upgrade. If you find any other reason - do upgrade, as F945 is probably the best option now.

  • I too had a VA3 (had to resend it three times...) and using a FR945 now. It really depends:

    - are you happy with your VA3? If yes, just buy a new HRM strap

    - Is OHR accurate enough for you (for most it isn't). If not, buy a new HRM strap

    - do you need the advanced metrics, features, ecc of the FR945/Fenix 6? If no, then there is no need to buy this watch, there are cheaper ones (which still have more metrics nowdays)

In my opinion, buy a HRM strap regardless if you upgrade your watch or not. If you feel like you need a new watch, check out the VA4 or the FR245. In most cases, the FR945/Fenix 6 is overkill. I bought a FR645M after the VA3 disappointed me, but since I like hiking and I ocasionaly run far from home in places I don't know the area, I wanted a watch with a map and good ABC data. So for me it was only the FR945 or the Fenix 6 (which costs way too much). Oh, and I also liked the advanced running metrics, else I'd have gone for the Fenix 5 Plus on sale.
