Software Version 5.50 - Forerunner 945 - Live

Update can be downloaded through Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile.

Clarification: For those of you who received 5.40 this update only includes the following:

Addressed an issue that caused VO2 Max update and Training Status to not update

If you have not yet received Version 5.40, then the update will include the above, as well as everything that was previously in 5.40 which I have included below.

- Fixed an issue that caused CIQ watch faces to display 0 calories.
- Added improvements to prevent dropped phone connection.
- Other minor improvements and bug fixes.
- Fix an iOS reconnection issue on some phones.

  • seems in this release the 24hours SPo2 Measurment is really good, i reactivated it for a test and the results a nearly the same as with my standalone spo2 measurement device.

Only the new recovery time have sometimes probs, didn't know if it is a prob when sync with Edge 830 recovery time, i am not sure, but the latest Edge firmware using old recovery time logic

All other things are really perfect, great work by Garmin!

  • First of all: I'm really a big Garmin Forerunner fan and I think it's great that Garmin always makes updates for the software. But what you have done since Ver. 5.xx is only annoying and yes - ridiculous! Previously, the training intensity control via the 945 was really good and reliable - but now it's a bad joke. The watch jumps from "peak form" to "unproductive", the V02max plays JoJo from day to day, the recovery times get longer and longer, although the training was reduced.
I am a triathlete and have a professional trainer who has developed a structured workout for me. My performances are also getting better (better 10 K time, better FTP on the bike) , only the 945 tells me my training is unproductive and my fitness is getting worse....
An example: yesterday I went for a walk with our dog. I was fully recovered according to my Forerunner 945. We walked 2 km in 40 minutes (!). My average heart rate was 68. At the end of the walk the watch says: VO2max down from 58 ml/m to 57 ml/m, training load 0.4 :-), aerobic benefit, TSS 6 BUT 15 (!) hours recovery... Ridiculous.

@Garmin, please get this fixed quickly - otherwise I have been your fan for the longest time. This is an essential feature of the watch - please focus on that rather than developing more gimmicks like the workout suggestions. You don't really need that. The training control does!

  • you've used the wrong activity for dog walking. if you're using the run activity, that will count towards vo2max calculation and it will alter your other statistics (training status, etc) regardless how low your hr was. for normal walks you have the walk application and that's the one you should use

  • I think that "Walk" will also impact the Vo2Max recording, at least I know I get a score when I walk on the treadmill using that activity.  To totally disable it though, you can use "Hike" instead.

you are making a wrong comparison, neither your trainer nor Training Peaks has such an insight into your sleep, recovery, resting heart rate as your Garmin watch

I do duathlon training, currently I follow a base plan on Trainerroad for cycling, I do my runs as Garmin suggests, so I have a much better balance in my training load and also regular improvements.

If a dog walk lasts longer than 20 minutes, I start the Garmin Walking App, otherwise there will be problems with the recovery time, especially after hard training sessions when i do dog walks. With move iq.

Anyway for Dog Walks you can't get vo2max estimation, it don't work for walking.

I am currently doing a test with 1mg melatonin before sleep, it is for better regeneration and better sleep especially after hard trainings and with melatonin my recovery time is much better overnight, Garmin somehow notices it Stuck out tongue winking eye

EDITH: i am using Training Peaks since 3 years and WKO5 since a year, to have a comparison, some things are better, some are not, they calculated your Fitness totally different to Garmin, anyway it'S very important that all your Zones and metrics set correctly

  • that's what I used!

  • that's not my point.

    same ...

  • I am not sure if anyone agrees with me, I think there is some improvement on battery life on 5.50.

  • Nope. For me is a little bit worser. About 0.2/h to 0.4/h. Tried restarts and other. No fix. Think i need to get used to.
