Does LiveTrack work with InReach Mini?

I was running (badly) a trail race last weekend.  I usually keep my wife informed that I'm still alive by sending her a LiveTrack via Garmin Connect on my Galaxy Note 9.  However, last weekend's race suffered from some cellular dead spots.

In order to keep her from calling an ambulance every time I hit a dead spot, I've been considering moving to an InReach Mini.  Theoretically it works with my 945.  However, it really doesn't go into a lot of detail as to what "it works" means.  So the question is whether I can send my LiveTrack through the InReach when I'm out of cell phone range.

I supposed it would be really cool if it switched back and forth during a single run depending on cell phone connectivity.  But that may be way too much to ask.

  • Good question, seems like you can based on this youtube:

  • Like the video shows, you can pair your inReach Mini to your gram in watch. You cannot use live track through the mini. When I run an ultramarathon, I use the inReach MapShare feature and then friends can track my progress with updates every 10 minutes. I can load the route in advance and they can watch my progress along the route. No cell coverage needed. You can also send and receive messages without cell coverage.

It works great as its own device but, sadly, it does not integrate with live track or fall alerts.

  • I can load the route in advance and they can watch my progress along the route.

Does this part work as easily as it does on the 945?  Just connect the inreach to a smart phone and transfer the route over?

Every 10min isn't very frequent but does it lag much in your experience?

  • Garmin inherited a Delorme system when they purchased inReach. That system is not well integrated into the Garmin Connect system. You can upload a gpx file to the MapShare system and it will display when you or friends view your progress on a web browser. For an ultramarathon, every 10 minutes is plenty for your friends to see your progress. I still track on my 945 to have my record of the run, including route, pace, elevations, HR, etc. I don’t track with the inReach. But, it allows pacers to know when to meet you, friends can be at the finish line at the right time, etc. Also, because a lot of my training runs are on trails that may be in and out of cell coverage, the inReach gives me the peace of mind that I could call for help, if needed. I used it in a canyon in Utah’s Escalante area to call for search and rescue for another party that had a medical emergency. Nice to have that ability.

  • Agree that 10min is plenty but if there is lag that 10min can make a big difference.  I guess based on your description there is no lag.

I've had a few use cases where having one made sense, but I have yet to pull the trigger.  Always wanted to know if it was something worth checking out, appreciate the info.
