945 smart trainer - free ride mode - resistance seems locked

Hi All,

Hoping for some tips. Unsure if this has to do with the newly pushed SW on the 945. (I recall something similar half a year ago).

Using:
- 945 - Indoor cycling - Smart trainer, free ride.
- v5.2 on the 945.
- Tacx app on Android to steer the Tacx Flux 2 Smart trainer.
(- Tacx app program with multiple resistance stages.)
- All ANT+
- Sequence of connecting (first the app, followed by the 945)

Today unfortunately the resistance kept stuck on an initial value, not following the Tacx App resistance settings.

Tried multiple things (turning off/on again etc).
In the end, the only way to steer the trainer was via the watch itself (only via slope setting).
Imho weird. I wanted to train today not to do extensive research.

Anyone similar experiences?
Anyone having access to an elaborate guide by Garmin on the smart trainer mode e.g. what the smart trainer mode value means?

Many thanks,
Marc

  • Do you need the 945 to take control of your smart trainer ?

If not, it might be better to remove your Flux 2 from your 945's smart trainer and add it only as a trainer (not smart).

I use the 945 to operate my smart trainer so I haven't tested this.

  • How stable is the connection?

I tried it once in a while, but I get stressed because the connection isn’t stable.

I set the resistance to 20 or 30%, but it looses the connection and back to default (too light).

    I have a tacx bushido.

It looses the connection repeatedly with my Edge 520 also, but the resistance remains the same I set before.

  • I had real connection problem when I had "Swisscovid" installed and running on my phone, but removing this apps (or disabling it) fixed the problem (even if my phone wasn't connected to the smart trainer).

As I have a smart roller (Elite Nero) and the choice of resistance isn't always good as one could fall if you don't take some precautions (I am back to my wall because of that).

  • HI Marc

I've had issues recently with my 945 'taking over' my smart trainer also, instead of being controlled by Zwift.

I've removed the smart trainer connection from my 945, and just connect to the PWR Ant+ profile for recording metrics - I'm hoping that fixes it.

  • All,

So far many thanks for the responses.

I will try removing the smart trainer as sensor, and just keep speed/ cadanse / power sensor. It seems a rational approach (be it that "free ride" earlier worked for me, so potentially v5.2 has caused this.).

Wrt the other suggestions, it doesn't seem to me that it is caused by a bad connection. (But I will keep this in mind).

Depending on my first next use with the similar setup (TA & 945) I will report back on my findings.

    Thanks again
    Marc
