Battery life and syncing issues improved with removal of strava segments

When I first got the 945 a week ago, battery wasn't lasting me more than 2 days. The solution that seemed to improve it the most was remove the "popular segments" selection from strava from being added to the watch, and I also un-starred all of the segments that were updating on the watch. This reduced my sync times (which were also failing quite a bit) from about 5 minutes to 15 seconds. The constant leaderboard updates are a nuisance to the watch it seems. Also, my battery seems to drain now less than 0.5% when I'm not doing an activity. Just thought I'd post for those who are having battery problems. Eventually, overtime, I'll likely add segments back to the watch, but it seems apparent to me why garmin limits the number of segments that can be transferred to the watch.

Anyhow, my question is this. Has anyone done the same, only too add a bunch of segments back later and not have any sync or battery problems? Part of me was wondering if there was just so much stuff downloading in the first few days, that the strava segments were making the watch "try to eat the whole elephant at once" vs just slowly adding segments I like back over time... One of the cool features of the watch is the strava segments, an issue I've never had with my Edge 830 maybe because it has a faster processor or something, so it's a bit irritating I can't use the watch to full capabilities without problems.

  • interesting! I have many many stared over the years.  Many not even in the area (from vacations and stuff).  I might try undoing the live segments in general now that winter is upon us here in Minnesota.  Won't be shooting for any CR/KOM i doubt for a while!!!
