Screen loses brightness and contrast during activity?

I was at the end of a 12 mile run two days ago and the activity data screen went from normal black foreground text on white background to a dim, barely readable green foreground on black background. I hit the exit button and the usual summary screen was all dark blue with no contrast so I could not see the "Save" or any text at all. I was able to sync my steps to my phone, but couldn't save the activity, so I let it idle until it auto-saved and then it synced.

I tried restarting and resetting with no improvement. The main watch face and widgets were fine, but all subscreens and the settings menus from the mid-left button were nearly unreadable. The weirdest part is that contrast and brightness would change as I scrolled up and down through the options. The backlight setting had just enough contrast for me navigate and raise the backlight level, but that didn't fix the contrast loss. I found only one similar complaint on the support site; the reply said it must be a hardware issue and to RMA the unit. But that didn't sound right to me, since the behavior, though weird, was very consistent in each subscreen. The next day, I was scrolling through the "About" subscreen to see what firmware version I had (5.0), and the issue just stopped happening, and now it's all good. I'm thinking it must be a firmware bug, but wondering if others have seen anything like this.
