Has anyone gotten rid of their Edge 830 after purchasing the Forerunner 945 and had any regrets?

I've used the DCR analyzer and have done google searches, but can't seem to find what I'm wondering. I have a 935 and an edge 830, and the training loads don't add up, which has always been an irritation to me. Now that the 945 has the same interface load status as the Edge 830 I question do I really need both devices if the 945 does more. I get I won't be able to have the 10 fields without an IQ app, and I may lose turn by turn direction street names, but am I missing any other glaring differences that will leave me with remorse for selling the Edge 830? If anything, if I can get rid of it, this will simplify life as I don't like recording with both devices just so I can have total training volume on the 945.

  • If you do, you will regret it. The display of the Edge is multitudes better for cycling than any watch if you do more than commuting and shopping sprees through the city. I started with Fenix 2/3/5 strapped to the handlebar on my city bike and bought an Edge together with the FR945. It really is about readability because feature wise they are mostly the same when riding.

But: If you enable Physio TrueUp, training load will accumulate on your 945 (but not in Connect, neither the app nor the web). There is absolutely no need to record on both devices for that. Im not sure about intensity minutes, but I wear my 945 in daily mode on my wrist when cycling so it counts them.

  • Thanks. That's interesting about physio TrueUp. Why in the world would they not just have them add up in Connect, as that seems like it's really the medium for the information. But it's nice to know the edge activities will make their way over to the watch eventually, probably upon connection to Connect? I wondering if the total is something they will fix in Connect. It seems more like a bug than how it should function. Do you know if it's the same for training status. In other words, my 935 currently says "recovery" but my edge 830 says "peaking"... If I had a 945, do you think it'd be taking the training load and then making an assumption, or is it still only  going to based on 945... Sorry, so many questions.

  • As far as I know, they dont give a f... about users wishing that Connect adds it up. It is asked since day one. Its okay if only devices with the same algorithm, like 830 and 945 are added up, but that would be even more work because they have to separate that function in the back and per device.

activities will not make it "eventually, probably...", but they do it for sure if you enable the sync. First, the edge has to sync to connect and second the watch. You can see: "all stats, training effect, hr, power and laps" afterwards on the watch, but not the map. In "all stats", the last line will be: "source: Edge 830".

As I said, training load is added up on the watch, as is recovery time, recovery advisor, training status, weekly load,...

  • I'm riding MTB.

I bought my 530 following a year with the 945.

I did that for the option of navigation mainly but also to get to see the data while riding as the watch is too small for that.

I also don't use a chest strap but using my 945 to broadcast the HR data to the edge.

Indeed, intensity minutes are not counted by the edge itself, but only on the watch.

When riding I record the ride on the edge and using the watch to send the pulse data only, so no duplicated recording done and the physio true-up syncs the data in between the units.

  • Bit off-topic, but riding MTB (or even road bike) I feel a bit scared of a slide-out/ crash that might destroy the 945 on my wrist.

Prefer a head unit mounted on the bars to see the data/ as well record the ride (and a Scosche arm HR monitor).

Just curious if others aren't similarly scared (or probably as terrible bike handlers) as me??

  • Hah! I'd say I have the opposite opinion and have experienced the opposite. I've flipped over my handlebars with my head unit attached the handlebars. My head unit has a gouge from a rock. Alternatively, I've never actually landed on the watch face of my 935. I could see if you have tight singletrack and don't crash how you'd want just the head unit so you aren't scraping trees, but you're like me and fly over your handlebars, something is bound to get scratched no matter where it's attached.

  • I use my 945 for road , mountain and tri biking, no need of an Edge.

Screen is big enough for the data you require, navigation easy as well.

Now if you have the 935 you don't have any map and would definitely suggest  an edge.

  • I've mounted my edge unit in top of the stem and by that it is less possible get hurt in a fall as it is not "outside" the boundaries for the bike frame.

Nothing is proof 100%, but still, I think it's safer than other options.
