Cycling Power Meter Recommendations

I messed up my knee pretty bad and I'm having surgery on the 21st.  My doctor says due to the injury, I'll be very fortunate if my running will be 50% of what it was prior to my injury after I recover.  Just another reason to add to my long list of voting 2020 the best fricking year ever.  Anyway, due to less impact, cycling seems to be a great alternative to running.  I've always been into cycling, but not to the point of buying a power meter until now.  I looked at the Vector 3's and was quite surprised that they cost just as much as my watch.  I'm looking to see if there are any cheaper alternatives that will work well with my 945.  My main concern is with my VO2 Max readings as I want to use something where I can see if I'm improving or not since I'll no longer be able to gauge this with running.  Thanks in advance.

So true. Hope your knee recovers faster than a COVID vaccine.

You can pick up some single sided PM's for around $300. However, with your knee issues (and likely power imbalances), dual/double sided PM's are probably better - although more expensive.

In terms of pedal-based PM's, the Favero Assioma's get a lot of love from DCRainmaker and (probably the leading sports tech reviewers) as being absolutely solid - and cheaper than the Vectors.

  • I went for a Single Sided Stages one and has been working perfectly with 945 and Wahoo Roam... ;-)

  • Pretty much any power meter is going to work just fine with your 945 - just a matter of your price point and bike setup.  Stages single sided or Assioma are probably your best bet from what I have seen.  (price and good performance)

  • I'm keeping my eyes on the iq2 (https://www.iqsquare.com/).

€299 for a double sided pedal. They've been delayed a few times now though. DC rainmaker already tested a single sided one and was reasonably positive about it.

  • I've been waiting for that thing more than two years now...

  • I'd take a look at the Assioma Duo.

With a bad knee (wish you a speedy and as complete as possible recovery) a single sided power meter would probably be a pretty bad idea. With two you always know what your knee is doing, if your strength is mostly even or if you 'limp' on the bad side. Especially with longer or harder workouts that could be a big help in not overdoing it and messing the knee up again. If your power is more or less even for an hour and after thet the balance drops to your healthy side it would be a good indicator to not go much over the hour mark for example and test once in a while if longer is ok now. Same with more intensity, if stuff below FTP is balanced but once you do harder efforts the balance drops it would also help to know and avoid it for the moment.
At least that's what I would do. I'm not an expert though. I'd also stop if it hurts of course but I would expect that the power balance drops before it feels really bad since the power balance is mostly subconsciously regulated whereas pain is more of a serious warning sign.

The Assiomas are really easy to install (just like any pedal, no special magic, can be swapped between multiple bikes) and mine are reliable so far.

  • www.facebook.com/.../ I wouldn't hold your breath bud. Ordered in June but got a refund last month, I wouldn't believe a word IQ2 say.

  • Thanks all for the well wishes and the recommendations.  I'll be keeping an eye out for some Black Friday sales.
