945 Walk activity and GPS problem

This is regarding a problem that recently started surfacing on my Garmin Forerunner 945 (which I totally love).

When walking outdoor (selecting Walk activity), we occasionally go inside a building to pickup a snack or something. Indoor is where the GPS starts bouncing around. Assuming that this is because of the signal reflecting off walls or something.

This previously never happened. It is my strong opinion that it is impossible to reach a walking pace of e.g. 1:45min/mile. The software should be smart enough to know:

1) that I am walking, hence can never achieve a pace that is humanly impossible to walk (i.e. not run, bike, etc.)

2) and be able to extrapolate and interpolate based on a route that I am walking and detect anomalies.

This is appears to be an issue that got introduced in the most recent firmware and is resulting in an inaccurate distance, best pace, etc., rendering my watch into a subpar device that isn't much better than the latest smart phones.

My wife owns the Garmin 4s and this watch doesn't have this problem.

  • GPS reception is always going to be bad or impossible indoors. The propagation of the satellite signal is "line of sight" so as soon as you go indoors it's not going to be picked up by the watch. It doesn't bounce off walls if it can't even penetrate a building. Pace and distance calculation should at that point fallback to using the accelerometer inside the watch but that can be quite inaccurate. Much better to use a good footpod like Stryd for these kinds of situations

It has happened before. it is well documented. It is what happens whenever you stop for any extended period or enter any building. The only way to avoid this is to pause the watch when you enter then restart when you leave.
