Look at this, my FR10 has better GPS than 945 (update, tested both watches today)

The GPS on the 945 is really starting to be a let down. Why is my ancient FR10 watch better than something £500? The FR10 tracks are dead on the path, if you zoom in on the 945 it looks even worse. When I run with FR10 the current pace stays the same but with 945 it jumps up and down. Garmin made a huge mistake moving to the Sony GPS chipset!

  • FR935 does not have maps. Maps are really nice feature, it makes trail running better and easier to follow the routes.

I have FR935 on the table, but I still daily drive 945 as it is better in many other ways, only thing is that GPS and my question was more like which wrist watch has similar features as 945 and better GPS accuracy.

I don't think that watch exists, if we think that maps are the key feature for me, competitors don't have maps and then Garmin uses the same GPS chipset on the watches that have maps.

  • I mean basic navigation not maps. Which is all you need not to get lost. Well the maps are more important to you than GPS but I don't know I mean if maps are that important I'd rather use 935 or FR10 and use a phone for navigation as that would be way better than tiny watch map. Have you tried wearing 945 on right wrist as others have said Fenix6 is more accurate on right wrist. I can't try as I am injured.

  • Haven't even heard that right is more accurate and it really doesn't sound to be a thing I would like to do. I'm just hoping for HW improvements in next version, we'll see.

  • Hi everyone,

I understand, that the 945 has a new GPS Chipset and that that was a compromise. OK, accepted. But I believe the Swim2 has exactly the same chipset, right?

Here are two open water tracks. The first from my FR945:

The other one from my wife's Swim2:

We were literally swimming alongside each other. So same day, time and location. Just the watches are different. And yes, I swam laps whle my wife swam one. But can you see how much smoother the Swim2 is?

Any explanation or guidance on this?

    Thanks, Georg

  • Same swim style? The track of your wife looks almost too smooth in my eyes..

Except for the quirk in the smal loop you did the track of the FR945 seems perfectly fine.

  • Thanks Max.

yes, same style. It's these loops and other artefacts that I do not like.

    Best, Georg

  • I finally got a chance to use the FR10 and the 945 together at the same time. FR945 right wrist, FR10 left wrist. 945 GPS + GALLEIO + 1 SEC. So I start the run and I'm in Nerja, Spain which is just at the beach. A lot of tall apartment blocks all around me as I head down towards the beach. The FR10 is giving me a constant pace whilst the 945 is jumping around. The FR10 is telling me I'm 25 sec per K faster and it feels right. Once I go along the beach they both read the same pace. As I run back into the city sometimes it feels the FR945 is correct and the FR10 isn't.

I checked the tracks and I was suprised to see they are both quite similar, sometimes the 945 is better sometimes FR10.

    HERE IS THE MAIN THING...

They both recorded the same overall distance and pace so that's pretty good! I also did a walk back home and they both reported same distance and pace, basically was clicking off on my wrist at same times. Tracks also similar.

    I will do more testing.

  • Looked at both comparisons.  Honestly, I can't tell if one is better than the other.  If anything, it looks like the FR10 doesn't sample as often as the FR945.  I would also set the FR945 to GPS only for a better comparison to the FR10 which I'm sure does not support Galileo.  The overall distance and pace are dead on between the two.

  • Thanks for looking and yea I agree I thought the FR10 would do a much better job, it was clear blue skies so I'll have to test later this week when it's cloudy. Considering the watches are on opposite arms this could be why sometimes the 945 is better and sometimes the FR10. Yeah the FR10 doesn't do 1 second GPS recording, I'll try the 945 in smart recording also and  GPS only on the 945. Yeah the overall pace and distance are spot on, would of been even more perfect if I started both watches exact same time think it was around 5 seconds difference in total time.

So what I am interested in now is doing intervals for 1KM on the streets. The FR10 is great at holding my exact pace and I want to know will the 945 GPS work well speeding up into an interval without losing the rep pace. I am going to test the 945 current pace more.

Today the Sony Chipset did well.

Tested again today, blue skies same weather same settings same tracking. Gallieo+1 sec + 2 min gps soak. EXACT same distance and pace on both watches some laps were clicking off exact same times per K.

Interesting at 4.7KM I run along the coast with nothing but the ocean on one side and a huge mountain on the other. On the way out my FR10 on my left wrist faced the ocean and the track is on the correct side of the road whilst the FR945 is on the other side. After I turned around and ran back on the same path it reversed, my FR945 was correct and FR10 wrong side. So it really matters what arm you wear the watch on as it can get blocked on either side. So this explains why sometimes the 945 beats the FR10 but mostly the 945 was better on this run.

If it's cloud tomorrow I'll test with same settings and if it's blue skies I'll test with GPS + Glonass or GPS only.
