Look at this, my FR10 has better GPS than 945 (update, tested both watches today)

The GPS on the 945 is really starting to be a let down. Why is my ancient FR10 watch better than something £500? The FR10 tracks are dead on the path, if you zoom in on the 945 it looks even worse. When I run with FR10 the current pace stays the same but with 945 it jumps up and down. Garmin made a huge mistake moving to the Sony GPS chipset!

  • Well, all I am saying is, it is a compromise that was made at the hardware level, there is nothing you can do as a user to improve it.

If you need more accuracy, this is not the right device for you.

  • Yes, but one would expect the newer generations just getting better and better..

And what would be the right device in your opinion if you want accurate GPS and multisport?

  • I am a pretty serious athelete I was running 125 miles a week with the FR10, brilliant GPS. The more I use the 945 the more of a gimmick I realize it is. I improved like crazy without all the useless gimmicks I see now it's for noobs. The bad thing is all the useless features are innacurate too. All they do is tell you what you already know and none of them are actionable so can not help you. Garmin 935 has more accurate GPS the ONE thing that helps you improve.. All you need for maps is trackback if you get lost. Just stash a coin or note in your pocket or under watch strap if you need money on a run. The assistance only works with a phone just get a Zanco Tiny T1 if you need a pickup. The music is radiation that will fry your brain plus low qaulity sound. The ipod shuffle 4th gen is a better music experience. The ClimbPro is pointless, I know my hilly routes like the back of my hand I know the efforts of every hill. I feel embarrassed to wear something so expensive on my wrist I so wish I kept my 935 :( I got it refurb like new for £140 so I wouldn't be anxious about scratching it. I am ashamed to own this watch the battery is only lasting 2.5 days too. I want to sell it and get the 935.

  • I see now it's for noobs.

A "serious" athlete doesn't make disparaging comments like this.

  • I am ashamed to own this watch

Read your last post again. There's so much more. :)

  • Sell it and get the 935, and stop exaggerating... And as already mentioned, you can't really compare activities from over 2 years apart.

The GPS isn't that bad, it isn't spot on all the time no... GPS usually isn't, inherent to the technique and corrected by algorithms and other sensors. The FR10 might be better, my old tomtom was too... Flipside? It only lasted a few hours and lacked in other departments.

The GPS in the 945 is a balance between efficiency and accuracy, also no clue how it can only last 2.5 days for you. With activities (say 3-3.5hr a week) it lasts for aboout 10-11 days for me, without for 2 weeks. GPS itself works for 24 hours....

As with all features, use it as a tool and guidance and not as the golden standard.

You sound like one of those 'serious athletes' who also downtalks people who run 10k in an hour saying "That ain't running!" with your remarks about a watch for noobs and ashamed of owning it.

  • > And what would be the right device in your opinion if you want accurate GPS and multisport?

The FR935 seems to have a comparable accuracy to the the FR10, but it has "only" 24h of use with GPS on, vs 36 for the FR945.

Neither will beat a hand-held device (bigger antenna, more power available for use, more space for more complex chip-sets).

  • I mean I am ashamed to own it because it is mostly a gimmick not because it is for noobs. Sorry I didn't mean to offend anyone I was just frustrated and feel like I fell for all the extra features (gimmicks). I think I will sell it and just use my FR10 as for me the GPS is most important and the other features are not useful enough to help me improve to make up for a poor GPS. I need that reliable current pace reading.

It is not just those two activities but I have yet to have an easy run or workout with the 945 where the current gps pace doesn't bounce up and down.

I remember reading a review when I got the FR10 in 2016 about how the GPS was better than the more expensive Garmins thanks to the developer team nailing the software side and they were right.

I don't see the point in sacrificng accuracy for a little longer battery. The 935 battery was fine it lasted even longer I found. I would rather have to charge my watch than have less accurate GPS.

My 945 is saying 8 days battery now, tried a different battery app.

My FR10 I never had a problem with battery becaus it has no bluetooth so I just left it in the cradle after uploading to charge. My doctor said it is healthier for your body not to wear a watch during sleep so I would rather that than track sleep. I mean I know if I had a bad night anyways.

I thought the barometer would be useful as I run in mountains but when you train everyday you stick to the same routes and you learn the hills off by heart. You know the effort needed and the barometer is just another metric that tells you what you already know.

The only thing that I do not know is my pace, I can estimate it ok but I learn to feel and know what paces I run so the GPS is actually a useful feature.

The only thing I will miss is not having a track back feature as I often run abroad but I will just do out and backs.

Sorry for rant I know peopl are not gonna like me knocking this watch on a 945 forum and I hope everyone is happy with it but it is too expensive for me what it is.

  • Since you got both watches it would be interesting to see a comparison from the same track at the same date and time. Use them both at the same time. Let them both use the exact same time to get GPS position. Then have one on each arm.

  • I have both watches but no charger for the FR10 until next week lol. I will report back on this thread next week with a comparison. I have tested the FR10 at the same time as the 245M in May and they both have the exact same time and distance post run. However that was after an annoying workout the day before with the 245M where I was running a workout at the beach and the pace threw off by 20 seconds slower. I remember going to the car, getting the FR10 putting it on my wrist and doing strides at mile pace on the boulevard to test. My FR10 current pace felt correct and the FR245M again 25 seconds slower. I was like no way am I running that slow they were fast strides.

I still wore the 245 afer that as I just thought oh the 245 just doesn't like that area lol. I have had some accurate runs with it I ran very even splits but it was in Holland on a 25km long road built over water with zero trees or buildings. I never realized how good the FR10 GPS is. I did 5x1K there and when I uploaded it to Strava each rep on the graph was almost a straight line for all reps! They were the best workouts I ever did. I locked GPS and said okay 2:57/km each rep no faster no slower and each rep was 2:57 the FR10 helped me lock that pace.
