Courses & PacePro for Training - what am I missing?

Courses for Navigation - big tick, I like and use regularly.
PacePro for pacing a known course - big tick.

But - where's the analysis??

If I run a course, it gets tagged in the activity, but it remains effectively just a useless meta-label, if I click on a course I want to see all my previous attempts so I can compare them and see progression etc.

Similarly PacePro - good during the run, but how do I check my adherence after the fact so I can improve and learn and concentrate on the areas where I've dropped off?? All the capability is there because I know for example I could create a Workout to match a PacePro strategy, run to that and I'd then see my 'adherence' (or not) to the Workout when looking at the activity, as it would drop blocks in the background indicating the various target paces etc.

They're both "nearly incredible" features that could be improved massively with only a few tweaks - so why don't Garmin work on them??

Are there any third party tools or process flows I'm missing that fill the gaps to making G945 a serious coaching tool as opposed to a tool for recording runs.

  • For reviewing previous attempts on a set course/segment then I find Strava is very handy. They also have a behind/ahead graphical comparison tool not just for your runs but others to see where you might have gone too quick/slow etc etc

On your more general point, then I guess Garmin try and attempt to cover the hardware first and foremost and actually Garmin Connect "collects" all your data, shows quite a few graphs and metrics but also acts to a conduit to other software analysis platforms like Strava or Training Peaks and I also use Stryd with their running power meter.

  • Garmin has their own "segments" feature.  You could set your course as a segment and then be able to do the comparison that you're describing.

  • Yup I’ve tried that...although initial test looks like I’ll have to crop the start and end of the course to create a segment that works properly Shrug

  • improved massively with only a few tweaks - so why don't Garmin work on them??

Well, they have some fundamental problems that Garmin hasn't fixed, which would also make they usable at first place in more places/cases. I mean that the elevation corrections for Garmin Connect is bad and if you get bad elevation you really cannot even use PacePro. And then you can adjust the pace change so little that it won't work for trail running when you want to walk the uphills.

But we can count it as a feature so, it's apparently done, and onto new features...

  • Ha yes PacePro even when set to max ease for uphills on PacePro there is not a chance in the world I can meet it’s suggested pace on trails and even most road runs other than a flattish course.

Im kind of thinking of using PacePro to generate the pace targets, but then manually building a workout to match except with corrections to make it achievable AND to display adherence on Connect.

  • I use it kinda like that.  I wish it would show the elevation up AND down in the analysis when it's created though.  All  it shows is net change and that is utterly useless.
