"Normal" straps

So... I will be receiving the 945 Tri bundle tomorrow. It comes with two Garmin straps (aqua and black). There are a few 22mm straps available listed as "for" the 945 on Amazon, etc. However, I have a load of 22mm straps in my collection and would love to slap them on, as well. I have owned the 235HR and the Fenix 3HR in the past. These did not allow for straps not specifically made for the watch, due to the extreme lug width (don't remember the Fenix, but the 235 was 16mm that converted to 22mm. It appears as though the 945 is just going to have a straight 22mm lug width. Has anybody added non-specific straps to theirs yet? If so... how did it work with the larger screw bar diameter?

  • Any straight 22mm strap will work. The pin is 2.3 mm diameter, so the strap must be able to accommodate that. Unless you have a quick change strap the process of changing a strap involves two small torx screwdrivers and is rather fiddly (but not difficult). It is probably not something you would want to do on a regular basis.

  • Personally I have bought this one in blue and black to match my own blue tri version of the 945. I have tried different colors as well but it doesn't match well with the blue details of the 945 itself.

Quality is great, I'd say no worse then Garmin's and two screwdrivers are included.

I think it's completely ridiculous that a bundle this expensive, aimed at triathletes and coming with a bike mount kit doesn't include quick release straps. You're almost obligated to buy quick release straps immediately to get the watch on your bike within 15 minutes.

  • Stefan... completely agree. I got the watch this morning, set everything up - including my Garmin Out Front mount with the 945 adaptor in place. Then I settled down to swap the blue strap for the black. I have the FR235HR that I have been swapping straps almost daily to match my clothing... two screwdrivers, two minutes, done. This one? EPIC FAIL for Garmin. The screws are smaller, the star pattern of the screws are smaller, the screwdriver ends are smaller, the hole in which the bar settles is recessed, and the lugs are far too large for that hole. I cannot imagine that whoever designed this has ever done a triathlon. As you mention, it would take 15 minutes to focus on this in transition. Terrible design. Cloggy mentioned quick change, but I do not understand how that would work, as the hole to accommodate a 2.3mm bar is FAR larger than any QR mechanism I have ever seen. I may end up rigging a holder for the strap instead of using the adaptor.

  • Well the straps I have bought are quick release straps so no more hassle with screwdrivers, just click on and off easily.

The only downside is that Garmin's own quickfit straps are €50 each.

  • Hmm, me thinks you’ve missed out how quick release straps work. It’s quite simple, they clip on and off the watch pin. There’s no removing of the watch pin involved once you’ve swapped out the standard strap for one with a quick release mechanism.

If the straps supplied with your purchase are ‘normal’ straps then you need to purchase quick release straps. You might also want to take GARMIN to task for supplying ‘normal’ straps instead of quick release one.

  • The QR straps I have experience with are catch pin QRs (I have a collection of over 100 watches), not Garmin quick release. I have not owned a newer Garmin with their updated QR. Will the 945 accept the straps made for the Fenix 6, etc?

  • As long as they are 22mm yes. I interchange my F6 straps with my 945.
