Question about Map compatibility

Hello everyone,

I have a Forerunner 945 and want to purchase some Garmin City Navigator maps for it (as I'd like to try car navigation with is unsupported with the default TOPO maps).

The Garmin City Navigator maps (download version) are here: https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/743228/pn/010-D1790-00 at £74.99

However I can see a cheaper option for the SD card version on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/GARMIN-Navigator-Europe-Micro-coverage-dp-B000MNA3BG/dp/B000MNA3BG/ref=dp_ob_title_ce £54.99

I understand that the download version can be linked to only one device, but if I were to purchase the SD card option, would it be possible to pop the SD card in a computer and copy the contents over to the watch? Is this possible or will the maps only be useable whilst stored on the SD card?

Many thanks.

  • would it be possible to pop the SD card in a computer and copy the contents over to the watch?

    AFAIK, no.

  • Wouldn't know why not to be honest... list of compatible devices between the sd and download version largely overlap (watches are not listed as supported with the sdcard version, most likely simply because you can't insert the sdcard on the watch).

Depends on the format though, best contact garmin about this (as they sell both sd and download version on their site as well they should be able to tell you this).

  • The 945 has a very small screen. I think it's a safety hazard if you are going to rely on it to drive.

Drive safely with a bigger device.
