Using FR 945 in Zwift with treadmill

I am trying to use my FR 945 to perform a virtual run in zwift but it is does not detect my movement. I have a HRM-Tri but not the footpod. I thought you could do a virtual run without a footpod but maybe this is not the case. Is there something I need to do to make this work before I purchase a footpod?

  • I believe you need to calibrate your movements first. The FR945 uses the arm swing (maybe amongst other metrics) to calculate pace. I found that if I reached out for a drink and stopped swinging my arm my pace would drop dramatically.

In the end I gave up on the virtual run and just bought a NPE Runn instead. Works fantastic with zwift and as a "foodpod" for the 945

  • Having no problems with the mode, so basically it is working. But as mentioned, it detects movement by motion of your arm. So it will not be the most accurate and drinking and such will impact pace. How is your watchface looking withing virtual running mode? It should look a lot different and somehow of a "connection page" instead of a training page when you normally run. I had some hickups in the beginning (beta time as the feature was new) that the virtual running mode did not start correctly and somehow switched to the normal treadmill run  (at least the watchface design). But with newest firmware i dont have such problem since a long time

I am 99.9% certain you need a foot pod. I use a stryd with my 945 for zwift and it works well. Without I though, nada. Zwift connects to the stryd rather than the watch via ANT+ for power and distance, and the watch also broadcasts my HR over ANT+ too. However the watch is incapable of broadcasting the distance from the watch to Zwift, so Zwift needs another sensor to talk to, which is the foot pod.

  • Use my FR945 for several runs in Zwift. No problem. Of course you should use the other hand for taking your bottle or towel, but with a regular arm swing the results are pretty good. For me it‘s cheaper and definitely much more simple than using an additional footpod.

Seems I was 99.9% wrong! Well I never. Didn’t realise they had added the virtual run profile that lets you broadcast speed and cadence too. That’s really good!

  • Very impressed with the 945 GPS today. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/5599798410 I ran loops of a 0.95km course at my top end easy pace and I held the same feel the entire run. All laps are very close within 3 seconds at 4:25/km. It was headwind for a half a lap and 250m of the course has very tall trees. My heart rate was very good too, ~163 almost every lap and that's exactly how it felt throughout. GPS+GLONASS 1 second recording.
