Watch not syncing (Android)

I woke up this morning up to 945 not syncing to the Connect app. The watch is on fw 5.00.

I did the following without results:

  • Turned bluetooth on/off on both devices
  • Rebooted both devices
  • Removed device from app and tried to re-add
  • Cleared settings on watch
  • Cleared settings and data on watch
  • Cleared cache on app
  • Signed out of app
  • Cleared all data of app

I am now left with a fresh app and a completely factory reset watch and it still cannot pair with the phone. I have had the watch since launch and this has happened at least 4 times in the past 17 months. In the past I managed to pair the watch after performing a lot of the above steps, and losing time over this random Garmin bugs, and having to set everything up from scratch. I have a ton of bluetooth devices that I use throughout the day and I don't have issues with them; even devices that cost a tiny fraction of the 945.

I love the watch when it works, but I have lost so.much.time troubleshooting issues. This is my second 945 (sticky buttons). From sticky buttons, botched firmware updates, battery drain, half baked features (groups) to Garmin forcing me to pay for return postage of a device under warranty, I am not a happy customer anymore.

Former Membertagging you in case this is of interest.

  • Update: After resetting everything and successfully pairing with another phone, and talking with Garmin Support, I saw that Connect should be popping up an Android prompt to pair the watch during the "Add device" process, and it wasn't doing that. It might have been sheer luck or coincidence but this is what actually triggered Connect to prompt me to pair and solved the issue: I turned off bluetooth and let Connect ask me to turn it on during the pairing process.

And then I went through the initial setup of the watch again, re-add my cards, configure widgets, configure quick menu options and many more. Today I lost almost 4 hours trying to solve this issue, again. Thanks Garmin.

As far as I know this popup does not come if you don't remove the bluetooth pairing from Android. Removing the device from Connect does not remove the pairing or remove it from Android. So you missed step

    * Removed Garmin 945 from Androids paired bluetooth devices.

This is probably pretty common problem and cause of problems when trying to do re-pairing.

  • I had removed it from bluetooth devices. I went through the process multiple times and made sure that it was removed, every single one of them.

  • Usually I just need to reboot my Pixel phone for any disconnection issue.

So far no problem with syncing of data except for the hacking incident.
