(Front Crawl) Stroke Meaning

I am not an expert swimmer so I do not know if there is a standard convention for this:

When Garmin says Strokes / Lenght or Strokes / Min... what do they mean. Strokes per arm or total for both?

For example, if I see strokes per minute = 20. It means that my left arm does 20 strokes in a minute and my right 20 as well. Is that right?

If so, is that standard usage? Or there are people who would mean that 20 strk/min means that left arm does 10 and right arm does 10 in a min?

I am swimming free style.

PS Also posted by mistake on FR935 forum (which was not my intention)

  • One stroke is one movement of the arm bearing the watch  therefore requires doubling for both arms. Is this standard? Probably for watches that are used to count strokes but the reporting could be different in different apps.

As a check, count your strokes next time you swim a lap of the pool.
