Body Battery algorithm changed in v5.0?

Got the update to 5.0 yesterday finally.

But they must have changed the algorithm of the body battery function. Woke up with 94% where normally would be 100%. During the night and sleep it went up to 100% and then during sleep started to go down again....very very weird. This never happens normally. No high heart rates during the night or other strange things.

During the day (today) it seems to go down faster than usual too. Quiet day behind the desk with an easy 5km run. Normally I would be at 60% or so....now at 32% and it's not even bedtime yet. Very strange that there's no mention of adjusting body battery function.

Anyone else notice this? The algorithm needs to learn again after update maybe?

  • Just checked again.... It came up 27 points. Normally it comes up 60 points at least during a normal night of sleep. What a terrible improvement on the body battery function. I check it regularly to see effects of a nap or when i drink a glass of alcohol (effects are negatively astonishing). Hope it'll improve in the next week. For now the function is not usable anymore....sad.

  • I noticed a change in behaviour as well. Can't quite put my finger on it yet but it seems to be much more volatile than it was before. Maybe it needs to re-learn me, or maybe I need to re-learn what it is telling me.

  • I also hope it's the case of relearning. It's just not right starting the day at 55 percent after a very good night sleep.

  • I am seeing the same thing. Instead of waking up at 100% I now wake up at 75%. BB only charges up from 4-8am(avg 50-75%), drops during run (normal) then charges to 4pm(normally around 75%) then drops back to 50% from 4pm to midnight(sleep from 10pm). seems off to me

  • This night the BB did come up a bit more...now to 73%. When i go to bed is see the graph start rising two hours after i start to sleep. I'm hopeful that it's a learning effect from the new firmware.

Crazy there are no Garmin editors in this forum that can just ease our minds with a simple answer instead of letting us guess all the time. Are we not paying enough Thinking

  • Mine it still the same today. I did notice the when I press the show stress button to overlay stress on BB whenever my stress was over 25 battery would drop. this seemed consistent since 5.0. My stress average daily is 15-25 but it does go above 25 at times. Would be good if others can check to see if they have the same observation.

  • Looked my numbers all the way from beta launch and even some before tat. Seems plausible and normal to me. Like today I'm having rest day and the body battery didn't much improve over night before 04 as because of last evenings run. Then when I woke up, it pretty much leveled and then some small ups and downs and now it's 7 points up since noon as I've been mostly sitting/laying on the sofa.

  • What I've noticed myself is that the OHR measurement seems off since 5.00 (https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-945/236630/did-ohr-whr-measurement-change-in-5-00-sw-update).

From what I've read about body battery is that it's also based on heart rate for a large part, maybe a wonky OHR causes the body battery to be off as well?

  • I just reviewed my BodyBattery data over the past few days, nothing really strange that I can see in mine.   Typically go to bed at 50-70%...  at some point in the early morning hours I hit 100% (usually 6-6.5hr sleep).  I am always a bit surprised with so little sleep it goes to 100%.  Yesterday I did early morning 10 mile run at an aerobic pace (zn2), 3.3 Aerobic TE and 0.0 AnaTE, load of 112.  Workout dropped me from 100->70% and then I was pretty flat light from there all day a bit up/down.   Went to bed late ~11:20pm at 75%... pretty quickly popped to 100% (2:15am), seems like it would take more sleep/rest to rise 25%.

I have been a bit interested in this feature, not sure how accurate it is, also just kind of in a maintain or slight build in training... plus working from home and covid... I guess I could expect a pretty similiar result day to day to day to day... for the past 6 months! (had 945 ~4mo).  I look forward to seeing how it works during a strong build of training ahead of a marathon or something, is it as helpful as say Strava's Fitness&Freshness for monitoring Recovery?

Only amazing thing in the B.B. % is when I drink a good amount (wake slightly to solid hangover), it often will DROP overnight.  With amazing consistency!

  • alcohol effects are incredible indeed....one of the reasons I check it regularly...see effects of a good night sleep and or when I have a drink. Already 1 beer has negative effect....good eye opener because it gave me insight to drink even less.

Last two nights the body battery came up to 100% again. Seems like it was learning again after the update to 5.0 firmware. Still a bit annoying we have to guess instead of a Garmin professional just giving an answer.
