New HR Recovery interface is bad

TL;DR: Information that was automatically and readily available now requires a series of button pushes and is cumbersome. Nothing is gained by this change. I've been using Garmin watches since 2006 - this is a step backwards.

-----

I know this has been addressed as part of a different thread, but I think it deserves it's own thread.

I just came back from a run. Previously this would have happened:

  • Stop my watch and start walking as part of my cool-down
  • After 2 minutes exactly, my recovery HR would pop up consistently and automatically (giving me a meaningful basis for comparison with previous runs), and I would stop my cool-down walk and start stretching.
  • I could dismiss it with one button push.

Total number of button pushes: 1  - couldn't have been easier.

Now:

  • Stop my watch and start walking as part of my cool-down
  • 5 button-down pushes to check for recovery HR - it doesn't pop up automatically and consistently after 2 minutes.
It's there, but how quickly? It seemed to be available immediately. Usually recovery HR is taken after a minute, Garmin has done it after two minutes for years (which is cool) .. now when does it get measured? I didn't wait two minutes to look for it. And is it measured continuously?
  • And I have to then navigate back to where I was before with several additional button pushes.

Total number of button pushes: 6 or more, and no automatic display, not intuitive or easy.

And, sadly, this information is STILL not made available in the Connect app or on the web, if so, I wouldn't mind the poorer interface now.

I understand this was done because some people were pausing their activity, and then disliked having to have to dismiss the automatic recovery HR screen. If you are pausing for more than two minutes (this is rare for me, and probably most), then I think you can muster an additional button push. Let's say this affect 3% (or 10%) of all activities.

Everyone (100%) who was getting the recover HR automatically at the end of their activity now has to push the buttons at least 6 times to get this info - doesn't seem like a good trade-off (or UI design).  I love the Garmin interfaces usually, esp on the watches in the last few years. They have been incredibly intuitive. I just helped a friend who switched from an Apple watch to a 235 and she picked it right up. But this is a step backward.

Please make the recover HR available in the connect app/web and consider going back to the previous way (or at least making this an option).

Yes, I know this is a first-world problem, but it's a small device and UI considerations matter. I've been using Garmins for a long time and have enjoyed the progress they have made. I'd like them to continue in that direction.

  • The only problem with this is that you don't easily see the new recovery HR menu option since it is "below the fold", you have to know you are looking for it before you manually browse down the list.

After a run I have a 3 minute cooldown walk to my home, in the previous solution I could pause the workout, walk home and automatically receive the recovery HR before I got home and saved the workout. Now I pause the workout, walk home, nothing happens and at home save the workout and then curse myself for not having looked at the recovery HR before doing so since there is no way to see it again once you saved for some reason it is not stored anywhere.

For me the best solution would be to just save it with all the other stats to Garmin Connect so I could view it later at my own convenience plus they could make a nice graph out of it like with so many other stats so I could see the trendline of my recovery HR.

That way it would take zero button presses without ruining the UX. I also do no have to manually browse to and remember my VO2MAX, right?

  • Third run with FW 5.0. Really like the new recovery HR interface. Excellent, exactely the way it should be. Thanks Garmin.

  • Simple case of "Can't make everybody happy" imo...

Old way, ppl complaining having to wait too long or it showing when not wanting it

New way, ppl complaining it takes too many presses and thus is annoying

Make it an option, ppl likely complaining there's too many options (also, you don't want to make EVERYTHING configurable... just clutters settings too much).

I hardly use recovery hr, but prefer the current option. If it's important to you you can check it (and well, for me pressing the button a few times is no biggie) and if it's important to you you'll probably think of checking it I'd say...

  • I thought I made this quite clear with my previous post and refuse to answer jmto when he says I didn't explain how I see this as a reminder

So, to you a reminder is something that you need to remember, ok. Now I get it.

And for the comments that goes against my person, again... .Should I start report them as abusive or can you stop it?

But for why I don't see this a reminder I'll first quote Stefan:

The only problem with this is that you don't easily see the new recovery HR menu option since it is "below the fold", you have to know you are looking for it before you manually browse down the list.

This is why I don't see is as a reminder. You need to do action before. You need to know and remember it's there. I find it hard to understand this as a reminder just because "it's on the list". To me reminder is something that I see without action that reminds me of something.

Like the new line indication that this button has some action, that's a example of a reminder in 945 UI to me, that hints me that hey, there's something that this button does! I don't have to remember what button does what, I can see what buttons I can press and I can see what do they do.

  • I agree this is a step backwards.  I prefer the old interface, but there is obviously dissension on the topic - seems like the best solution would be a config option available to the user.

P.S.  and yeah I'm still beating the drum that it's ridiculous there is no option for viewing/recording this in Garmin Connect.

  • Definitely this information, since it's measured and available, should be presented on the app and on the web. That would be a good solution if providing the configuration option isn't implemented.

Having had a few more runs with this new interface just reaffirms my previous impression of it. I could live with the extra button pushes (as unnecessary as they are) if the watch would at least buzz after 2 minutes to remind me (like it always did, so I wouldn't have to remember during my cool-down) that the recovery HR is now ready to be viewed.

This solution would also ally those who feel that pushing even one button is too much, but think it's ok to have an interface that requires 6 pushes :)

  • I agree on your concern. Garmin should provide more options on the Connect.

HR recovery Auto ON - Go back to the old design. Pop up HR recovery

HR recovery Auto OFF - Don't pop up

Oh and please allow ALL the options to be accessible and customizable on the Connect. Less buttons pressed on watch is definitely PREFERRED.

I am surprised that I cannot find options to set activity alert (pace or HR) on the Connect for FR945. This option is available for FR45.

  • I was lost during few days but now, it's ok for me.

Pro : we have a clear timer now. Before, it was random between 2 minutes and more... and one case who I waited forever ;-)
To improve : HR Recovery menu should be on top of the list after Continue and Record.

Why on Connect? Should be a basic setting on the watch itself....

  • Because some settings can be changed from both Connect and Watch.

Given a choice, I rather change from Connect instead of pressing so many times on the watch.
