Time deviation overnight [945]

Hello,

Regularly when I wake up the time on my 945 is anywhere between 5 and 15 minutes behind the actual time, until I turn my phone on / sync.

When I sleep I have my phone powered off and the bedroom doesn't have gps accessibility through the walls.

This sucks because it's caused me to be almost late for an appointment on a couple of times.

Anything to do about this?

Stefan

    hi,

sounds to me like your FR945 is crashing and rebooting during the night

any special CIQ app running ?

so you suspect the watch is syncing with gps because it can not connect to the phone ?

is there another phone in the house with which you had it connected previously ?

    Anything to do about this?

do not turn off your phone Slight smile

  • As far as I can tell it doesn't crash. Sleep tracking doesn't show any gaps.

The only thing I have installed is a watch face, which I had on here and previously on my Fenix 3 hr without issues.

I prefer turning off my phone, both to safe battery and reduce radiation when sleeping next to it.

Does the 945 need constant phone or gps access to keep the time relatively correct? That would suck.

    no it does not

but it could still start a sync routine because you have paired it to the phone and you turn off the phone Slight smile

before going to bed you could try and turn off the phone connection on the watch as a test

As far as I can tell it doesn't crash.

connect your FR945 to a computer and check these folders for crash logs with recent dates

    • APPS/LOGS latest CIQ_LOG.YML file
    • DEBUG
    • EVNTLOGS latest TXT file

also on your watch in menu SYSTEM/ABOUT look for the CPE status (current ?)

  • As Only Two suggests - check the logs for crashes.  These watches do not have crystals so the accuracy is maintained in the software and is not the greatest compared to some - lots of threads through the various forums on this with statements like "my $40 old Timex is more accurate" (ignoring the fact that the old Timex could do little more than tell time) . However, if I recall one Forum "test", most people would see in the area of 5 seconds per day drift maximum (often less) which would seem to be good enough for a watch that will then sync to a phone plus get adjusted anytime the GPS is used.  Bottom line IMO, if you are seeing 5-15 minutes drift overnight something is definitely wrong. Check the logs, turn off any extra watch faces, possibly reset (start with soft) and then see what is happening.

  • Try something different.

Do not off your phone. Just put it to silence mode.

  • Thanks but like I mentioned I don't want my phone turned on next to my bed all night due to battery conservation and unnecessary radiation.

Agreed. That's why I don't have my phone by my bed and wear a tinfoil hat.

  • I can't imagine that being comfortable on your pillow but to each his own of course.

  • We don't really know if the time out of sync is due to phone/watch disconnection or your watch is having problem.

My above suggestion is just a test. Leave your phone on silent mode and let phone/watch maintain the connection while sleeping. Just to monitor.

When I leave my phone on silent mode, I put the phone on the table but still within reach with the watch. Why must you put the phone under your pillow?

  • The FR945 uses a software based timer instead of a RTC, this means the timing is depending on CPU load. If for any reason CPU load reaches 100% overnight, the time will lag.

Reasons could be both, internal Garmin software but in most caess watch faces. My suggestion would be to perform a full reset on your watch and try a couple of nights without any extra non-Garmin software to see if you have a persisting issue (might be hardware then) or if it works. Then start adding one software part (watch face, activity, widget, etc.) at a time and see if the problem reappears. So you could nail it down on something concrete
