Bad GPS for first two runs

I just got a 945 upgrading from a 220 which I've had for 6 years. After completing my first 2 runs the GPS uploaded to strava the map was way off. The first issue was that I ran a loop, but the map didn't even close. It was off by 2 miles, yet the reported distance was right. Strangely the missing segment was at the end of the run, not the beginning where I might expect a missing locked signal to be the culprit. Today's run, same issue and the run was off by 0.2 miles on a 6.2 mile run. The map was missing at the end so again it wasn't a completed loop.

I checked the software on the watch and it says 3.9 under system. I have auto update on and I'm using GPS+GLONASS. Are there other settings or tips to improve GPS performance? This is a huge degradation from my 220.

  • update the watch using garmin express - the last version is 4.40; also - that's the same version for the gps chipset (it's a separate component - 4 pages below the main page that displays the current firmware version); with those updates, you'll get better gps tracking performance.

Thanks! Went through the update process and then went on a mile walk. Much improved recording! Hopefully it holds up for the runs. Appreciate the response. My mistake was that I assumed that firmware updates would happen wirelessly.

  • ;-) - no worries. you can also get the fw via garmin connect mobile (gcm) over bluetooth. honestly, i'm not sure if you'll get the update via wifi though; with the latest gps fw, the recording quality is pretty good - for me this fixed most of the issues (zig-zags, etc). anyway - glad it helped ;-)
