Want have 945, Question: ist there really a baro design flaw? (because on back)

Hi together,

I want to buy a new watch. Like the 945 so much because same as Fenix, but more sportier and light.
But I do also a lot of things in the mountains.
Calibrating the watch and washing, cleaning no problem.
But there are Discussions, if these watches have a design flaw, because of baro hole on the back.
Can this really get inaccurate due to sweat during a 10h session in the mountains, if cleaned before each time?

It is hard to believe that Garmin makes such a flaw.

What do you think? Is there a official Garmin statement?

Or would be a Fenix 6s the better option with hole on side if I want to have accurate altitudes?

Thanks!

  • Yes, it's there, but I don't think it's a serious issue, sweat is not going to block pressure from entering the sensor. If liquids could make a device pressure-sealed, making waterproof devices would be a lot easier :D

  • To be clear it actually has interconnected holes on the side of the body under the strap as well.

I still think all holes off the wrist is superior, but that said, I believe it is designed better than you are thinking it is.

My barometric seems better than it has in the past, not sure if they updated something.

  • On my forerunner 935 with a similar design the barometer is next to useless. It shows jumps in airpressure that are quite impossible. It gives multiple stormwarnings on a beautifull day. It reports that I gained 180 meter altitude on a flat run.

I just turned it of and never bothered with it.

  • Yeah, never had that on the 945, but YMMV I suppose...

  • I use the Forerunner 945 almost exclusively for mountain activities (hike, trailrun, mountainbike, alpine tours...) and it works pretty flawless

  • I would not buy a 945 because its not near the same as a Fenix. There are quite a few (new) Features on the Fenix for mountaineering/climbing wich will most likely never come to 945.

The barometer on the 945 has no design flaw. I did take it two approx 20 day to day hikes in the Alps last year and it didnt do strange things. Just rinse it under the shower when you finished your hike.

  • i would chime in with my experience as well - i had a 935 that developed the baro problem - garmin replaced it under warranty with a brand new unit - the old unit was almost 2 years old and had lots of pool sessions under the belt and was well taken care of; the 945 i'm currently using -works fine, no issues; the death of the abc sensor comes mostly from pool usage - chlorine particles will eventually buildup and form a thin film (but that's also possible with dust / sweat (actually not the sweat itself but the salt within) etc) - hence it's recommended to soak/ rinse the watch in water after the pool swim / sweaty activities.

Really? What does Fenix have, that 945 does not have? 945 got a lot of updates...

  • As long as we are talking mountain sports:

    indoor climbing

    indoor boulder

    backcountry ski app

    ski map

Altitude adjustment widget (altitude adjustment is in FR945)

map themes (don’t know if it is useful)

This are only thinks I got at first thought, for more I would have to Check devices.
