945/HRM Tri stride length, oscillation & ground contact dropouts - But e.g. cadans, HR & GPS fine

Hi,

Anyone having similar experiences? Is it a faulty HRM-Tri band?

Using my 945 & HRM-Tri for outdoor running the graphs show recurring dropouts in the measurements of: stride length, vertical oscillation & ground contact time. Other metrics don't show that discontinuity. I enclosed an examples with the drop outs marked yellow in between the other readings that appear fine.

I have experienced this now for over 10 consequence runs and failed to find a solution in: replacing the battery of the HRM-Tri, removing and reconnecting the 945 and the band, restarting the 945, same with sw ver 4.2 and 4.4 removing the GarminLabs Combo Running Power app.

Looking back in the data the problem is increasing in occurrence. (Not swimming with the HRM-Tri, nor maltreating it). Dropouts may last over 2 mins. Started within 2 months after purchase of the 945 HRM Tri set.

Many thanks

Marc

  • One of the features of the HRM-TRI is that has store-and-forward for HR data. So if it loses connection with the watch, it will send the data later (which is great for swimming or contact sports). Cadence will be sent from the wrist if it is not coming from the TRI.

    I'm not sure whether you are losing the ANT+ connection (but the HR data is being sent later and filling in the gaps), or whether the accelerometers in the TRI are dropping out but you had connection all the time.

    Looks like you have started with the most obvious trouble shooting.

    A couple of other suggestions:

    * can you match any the dropouts to any EMF interference (eg. running past an electricity substation, taking a phone call)?
    * tighten the chest strap

  • There have been a lot of complaints in the 245 forum about HRM-Tri dropouts that blame the watch firmware, though there have been a couple of posts about it in the Sensors forum with a variety of devices. You might want to peruse those and open a ticket with Garmin Support (call or chat preferable to email) for good measure.

  • The HR during the interruptions may also be coming from the watch. This looks like a steady effort, so they might have been close.

  • Thx for the reply! Store-and-fw behavior makes sense.

    Wrt suggestions (I studied);

    - EMF interference not expected; no changes in and surrounding the track that I am happily  using many years, nor is there a pattern in location and the dropouts.

    - chest strap is snug (and I estimate the specific metrics dropping out would not drop out due to poor body contact)

  • Thx @Roedema for the replies;

    • Wrt the 245 and sensors, I will look at those.
    • Wrt watch as alt source of HR, I have been thinking about that too...
      and my take would be that there would be a connection issue between the watch and tri-band. My guess is that the chance that the HRM-Tri has an issue is bigger as I use also other sensors over ANT+  that don't show drop outs (e.g. Tacx, 4iiii over many consecutive hours, together with the HRM-tri).
    • Wrt calling a support, perhaps the shorter way will be contacting the vendor for a replacement.
  • It could be a faulty HRM?

  • I guess so... (the above mentioned 245 issue is more on HR data as far as I have been able to look up).
