Maps do not work

Hi, I'm having a problem with the cards on the Forerunner 945, I bought the watch a few weeks ago and on my first runs the maps worked just fine. Then I updated the maps (first time i connected the watch with garmin express) and since then no more maps appear on the device. When I run a route there is only the line that shows me the way but no map in the background. I have already tried twice to reinstall the maps via Garmin Express without success. Any ideas what else I could do?

  • Connect the watch to a computer, check if there's a gmapdem.img file on it (in the Garmin folder), make a copy to the computer and remove it from the watch.

Reboot and hopefully that makes it usable again

Thanks for your answer. I just tried and was not successful. There is no difference if i remove this file and put it back after. As well I deleted all the settings of the watch and made a new set up without success. Actually, if I zoom out I see some main streets but nothing else... Maybe the file of the map (Europe in my case) has a problem. To download it completely new I have to delete the file in Garmin Express!? For the moment Garmin Express pushes every time the same downloaded file on it I guess.

Would be happy if somebody else has another idea what I could try more before I reach to the Garmin Support.

  • Open the maps app.  Go into map settings, map, configure maps. Are the maps you need activated?

In the settings i have two available maps (both were activated) - 1. Worldwide DEM Basemap and 2. TopoActive Europe North East. The first map works and gives me some basic streets around the place I live in France. If I switch on the TopoActive Europe North East there is nothing anymore. Looks like the 1 Map is working and the second one not.

  • It sounds as if there's a corrupt file with the Europe North East maps download.  I've seen many threads (F6 & 945) with recent problems with the European maps.  I use the North American maps, so I didn't pay particular attention to the issue.  So, does it works with the worldwide DEM maps, but you're missing detail with Europe North East (France)?

Yes the worldwide DEM map works but it didn't include detailed information about my region (for example trails). The Europe Map doesn't work at all.

  • I had an issue months back where my maps were turned off and was hoping the same happened to you and it was an easy fix.  Do a search for Europe Maps 2020 on the F6 and 945 forum.  I'm sure I read a problem with those maps with the most recent update.  Maybe there's a solution posted there.  Sorry I couldn't be more help and I hope you find a solution soon without having to wait until Monday when Garmin's support returns.  Beautiful country by the way.  My husband and I were stationed in Germany 23 years ago and were fortunate enough to travel.  We spent a lot of time in Paris, Metz and along the the border of France and Switzerland.  Beautiful region.

  • Well, France is part of the TopoActive Europe South West map... So that would explain.

Check Garmin Express if the Map is listed there for you and try a (re)install. Possibly under map options or something.

Thanks for your help. I was able to solve the problem. Looks like the South West Map was not on my watch after the last maps update - even i didn't change anything in the settings or so. When I tried to simply reinstall, the map didn't come back. So I deleted the file with the maps from my device (made a copy before just to be sure) then deleted all the downloaded maps from my computer as well (searched for ActiveEU.2020.10 on my MAC). When this was done I connected my watch with Garmin Express and reinstalled again the maps. And after that it is now working again. So looks like there was a problem with the Europe South West Map that I couldn't solve with a simple reinstallation over Garmin Express - I had to delete several files before. Anyway! Thanks for your ideas and suggestions.
