Navigation cues inconsistent or even too late on 945

I didn't buy Forerunner for navigation but after 1 year of usage I for couple of times used preloaded course with turn by turn navigation. I don't understand why the turn notifications come at random distances to the turn (20m - 200m). There are sometimes 2 notifications with 2nd cue should be just at the turn. Well, it always has come way after the actual turn (useless at best, confusing at worst). I doubt how GC decides where to put the navigation cue. I usually get cue also when the road just slightly bends into right or left but then couple minutes later no cue for road crossing.

Is there an option how to control where on the course those cue occur? I would rather have only few at the key points which I don't want to miss rather than hundreds of notification telling me to turn left or right several meters or tens of meters after the turn. I appreciate the GPS accuracy is not +-1m so it would be better to get a notification like 100m ahead maybe with short change to map screen?

  • My understanding is that it's not random, it is based on your speed. It comes at "same time" before turning.

But the yes, usually it says turn now, after you have already turned. Dunno why.

I don't know that there is option to control these.

I think it's a combination of speed and where the GPS is plotting you.  I've had this happen to me using Google Maps while driving.  Depending on speed and where the GPS says I'm at, I've had a "turn right in 400 feet" notification (which seems correct) and then a second notification to turn right after I've passed the turn.

  • Indeed if its based on speed and position, I see why it was so random when going on MTB in the woods. Next time I'll try head to head comparison to head unit navigation like Wahoo Bolt.

  • Happens on my Forerunner 935 the same way. I've complained about it (to the correct dutch garmin support mailbox) more than a year ago but Garmin never responded.

I do find navigation is one of the key features of my FR and I do find Garmins implementation is not the best. Their software development skills are even worse than their customersupport (at least my experience with the dutch garmin support)

To bad there are not really alternative options. Polars navigation is even worse/very limited. I liked Suunto, but their top model is way to big, their backend software is a mess and recently they choose WearOS for their new device, which means battery live of 1 or 2 days.

My Forerunner 935 starts to show it age (after 3 years). Cracks in the heartrate sensor. Decreased battery capacity (although it's more likely caused by software bugs). I'm not used to see a sportwatch so wornout after 3 years. (my 3 previous Suunto's didn't)

  • Garmin has always been like this, I had the same issues with their NuviCam car unit too. I tried the 945 for a couple of courses I created and it always beeps far far too late. I missed a couple of non-obvious truns on roads I had not ridden on before.

  • I found a workout with Course points instead of automatically created Turn by turn cue points. Create a route outside of GC with Course points and copy it over to FR945 over USB instead of GC sync. This way I get notifications only for my own Course points and not those automatically generated cue points for every slight bend of the road. Works well, when you create a route you see where a problematic point could be and you add one or two warning Course points ahead. In combination with Distance to Next Point data field you know way ahead when approx. you should start focusing on the road signs, watch notification and when you can relax.
