Cycling with FR 945

Looking for other suggestions on how to best capture data on my cycling activities. This is what I do now, I use my Edge 130 that is synced with HRM, cadence and speed sensors. (No power meter yet). I also sync HRM and cadence and speed sensors to my FR 945. I know that just using the Edge 130 I don't get any of the training status numbers. So when I stop I save the data from my FR 945 and discard the data from my Edge. Does anyone else have any other suggestions or work arounds?

  • That's the way to do it.

    Thank you.

  • I don't know if this will meet all your needs, but there is a way to use your watch to capture data and your Edge 130 as a remote display.

  • Too complicated, I just have everything (speed, HRM, cadence, powermeter) connected to the FR945 and used as a bike computer. True size screen is not the best but you have way more features than Edge 130, including ClimbPro.

  • There are 4 options available.

    1. Record your ride on both devices, then discard rather than saving at the end of a ride on the 130 to avoid duplicates (or have the 130 syncing to a different account).

    2. Record your ride on the 130 only, and Physio True Up will transfer all the data and stats to the watch after your ride. (You can enable Physio True Up on Garmin Connect for both devices).

    3. Use the Extended Display functionality where the 945 will transmit data to the 130, where it can be better seen on a larger "out front" display.

    4. Just mount the 945 on the handlebars, and use that as your bike computer.

I have the Edge 530, and use method 2 as being the simplest. However, the 130 lacks some of the advanced metrics of the 945 (and 530/830), so in your situation, I would probably use method 1.

  • I have an old edge 500 on my bike. Just paired the speed/cadence to both the edge and the 945. Have my 945 broadcast heartrate, so I can see that on the edge of I'm not wearing a chest strap. Record the ride on both devices and just discard the one the edge.

  • I do the same thing with an Edge 520 I picked up from a friend. I pretty much use a fancy ConnectIQ data field to give me a nice convenient display. My 945 is set to automatically Broadcast HR when recording.

I have noticed that I am getting inflated elevation gains when cycling with the 945.  I have manually made Garmin Connect correct elevation gains on a few rides that were 30% over.

The issue is only with cycling. For running, my 945 records elevation gain statistics that appear very consistent. After seeing the cycling issue, I experimented with doing an elevation correction on a couple of runs on Garmin Connect and the numbers barely budged, in fact, it added a few feet to one run. So the 945 stats were just about dead on for running.

  • I use method 1 and do not discard, I'm not sure if it brings any duplications. Only the calories maybe, but who cares....at least not myself

  • Same, it only shows in Connect as double the distance, but everything on the FR945 and Edge 1000 show as single not duplicated values or entries.
