Trail Running

Hi all, just received my FR945 Blush was wondering what settings people think are best when trying to follow a map when trail running?

Is turn by turn helpful or an annoyance?
What's the best way to get alerted to the fact that you've gone off course?
Any other recommendations to make it as easy as possible to run a course hard but allow the watch to keep you on track?

I went for a non-trail run this morning and got flooded with notifications when trying to follow a route even though sometimes I was still continuing straight. Does a flag at the bottom of the map mean I'm coming up to a turn or way point? And does a flag with numbers try to alert me to a turn in X metres? 

I don't wear headphones if that helps

  • The flag normally means distance to the end, rather than to the next point. 

    I find using garmin to create and manage routes is a nightmare! Something like plotaroute is far better. You can add points on the map that the watch will then use as 'distance to next' etc, export as a .fit file and then drop straight into the NEWFILES folder on your watch using a PC.

    If following a route I normally just have the map on the screen and use it to give an idea of turns coming up. I mainly run trails too, so its fairly obvious when a fork in the trail, new turn or a major new path needs to be taken. I sometime even take the map off and use the breadcrumb if the map is a little busy and I just need a basic idea of direction, or know where I am anyway.

    Doing the mapping on Garmin seems to fill the whole course with turn points... I can look at the map for turns, I dont need my watch to bleep.

  • Agree with that Garmin's implementation isn't the best.  I am too lazy to mess around with files on my computer etc so my simple workaround is just to turn off turn-by-turn notifications in my watch settings (under navigation).  They are just far too frequent, indicating every turn of the trail basically.  I also think the constant beep/vibrate was having an impact on battery life, especially on long runs.

    I do like the map though, and if I think I am off course, a quick flip to the map screen will show me quickly.  That's saved my bacon a few times.
