Very few way-points when Do(ing) course in Reverse

I imported a tcx file (from ridewithgps) into GC and then sent it to my FR945. It's a 120km bike course.

The track looked good on GC and even on the watch it seems to be fine and detailed when zooming in before selecting "Do Course".

However: I wanted to do it in reverse. After selecting the appropriate option on the watch, the course suddenly is very coarse and it only consists of a way-points every few hundred meters with straight connections in between. This makes it hard to follow twisty roads or tricky intersections, not to mention the permanent on/off course notifications.

Is this a known issue/expected behavior?
I would have hoped that the reversed course is as accurate (and actually following even tight bends in the road) as the original.
