Activity vs App vs Widget

Former Member
Former Member

Hi guys and girls..

I m new to Garmin and I m not sure I understood the difference between activity, app and widget.. (add also a fourth term, namely "controls" to the list if you like)

Also, I read somewehre that there are some 130+ activities available but my FR945 definitely came with fewer... where are the others?

Sorry for asking very beginner questions... but i cannot find an answer in the owner manual (pls tell me if i m wrong here)

Thanks again

  • An activity is a feature which allows you to track and record various parameters of a sporting activity you're doing.

An app is a general purpose app, usually downloaded from the IQ app store, and not necessarily sports-oriented. To make things more confusing, Garmin sometimes uses the terms "activities" and "apps" interchangeably, the idea being, that from the user point of view a difference between a built-in activity and an app should be minimal, although technically they're very different.

A widget is a special type of app, which is supposed to be used for a very brief moment with minimal user input, like having a short glance at something. Accessing widgets works differently than accessing apps or activities, and widgets are somewhat limited in what they can do.

I read somewehre that there are some 130+ activities available

This can't be right. None of the current garmin devices has that many.

Apologies! It was the Polar Vantage V.. You have no idea how much research I did before buying my FR945 and I got confused!
