Questions on Chest Straps

Dear Garmin Friends

I have a FR945 paired with a HRM-Tri and a few things I dont understand.

Is the chest strap used only for activities or if I wear it outside of activities it then monitors my heart rate as well?

After I finish an activity I see an option "Download HR". Does it mean that the chest strap has a memory? If so, does it delete stuff related to an activity as soon as I click on "Download HR"? Do I run the risk of the chest strap memory getting full? Is it possible to do "Download HR" days after i completed the activity?

Anyways, why would I need to do "Download HR" if the heart rate is broadcasted live to my watch during an activity?

On a separate topic: is there any way I can go for a run just with the chest strap and then get the data to the watch when i m back home (i m asking this to avoid wering the watch when I run in a park which might be considered a bit dangerous)?

Thanks a lot for the help!!

  • Is the chest strap used only for activities or if I wear it outside of activities it then monitors my heart rate as well?

    Only during activity.

Does it mean that the chest strap has a memory?

    Yes.

does it delete stuff related to an activity as soon as I click on "Download HR"?

It will overwrite heart rate data for the activity, but any other data should remain intact.

Do I run the risk of the chest strap memory getting full?

No. The strap can record up to 20 hours of HR data, and will start overwriting oldest data once run out of storage.

Is it possible to do "Download HR" days after i completed the activity?

Yes, as long as it has not been overwritten by later data. See answer above.

why would I need to do "Download HR" if the heart rate is broadcasted live to my watch during an activity?

The strap can be used in scenarios when you don't wear your watch, or you swim, in which case the strap is disconnected, because ANT+ radio waves do not travel through water.

You would have to start an activity on the watch before you leave home.

    Great info you gave me!!

So is the following understanding correct?

As soon as i save a activity (say bike) with the chest strap i'll get the menu (AllStats/TrainingEffect/HeartRate/Laps/Map/ElevPlot/DownloadHR/Delete). If I dont do "Download HR", all the info that i can see in these menus (i think there are hr related info in allStats, heartRate and lap and indirect in trainingEffect) is coming from the wrist hrm. Then, as soon as i do "Download HR", all this info gets updated (ie overwritten) with data coming from chest strap. In other words if i look at, say, "AllStats" before and after having done "Download HR" i will see DIFFERENT numbers.

    Correct?

    Thanks again

  • The only times you need to download the data from the strap are after swimming or where you have been using the strap during team sports or other activities where you cannot use your watch so have it on the sidelines recording an activity.

At other times such as running or cycling the strap is operating as a normal strap and transmitting data to the watch. Data is not coming from WHR.. WHile the data might still be available on the watch there is not point downloading it.
