Lock heart rate zone during training

Hi all.

I recently moved from a polar watch to the Garmin Forerunner 945.

I normally schedule my trainings and know about the functionality to set specific heart rate zones for sessions.

But sometimes I just like to go on spontaneous runs. On the polar watch it was very easy to “lock” the heart rate zone you were currently in, so the watch would alarm if you exceed or undercut that zone.

Is that also possible on the Garmin system without having to set up a training upfront or go deeply into the menu every time before a run?
should be easy and simple by just a few clicks during running. The polar watch was quiet old and able to do it.

thanks in advance.

  • Yes, you can set HR alerts to signal if you drop below or exceed your setting.

  • Hold-press middle left button while in Activity.

Press upper right button (enter) to select (activity) settings.

Scroll down one spot to "Alerts" and press enter

    Select "Add New"

Scroll down to "heart rate" and press enter.

Scroll down to select the zone you want to lock into and press Enter and back to the activity. (you can also choose a custom HR option - both high and/or low alerts.)

(the next time access alerts, this Alert will appear below "add new" and you can just go directly to it.)

So, maybe not as easy as the Polar process but pretty darn easy, especially if you've done it before.

  • It might be worth setting up a very basic and generic Training Workout. 5 mins warmup, 50 minutes zone 2 (or whatever), 5 minutes cooldown.

If you are running less than 1 hour, just hit the lap button, and it will advance to the cooldown. The watch will alert you any time you are outside zone 2.

Any time you want to go for a spontaneous unstructured run (while still keeping within your target zone), just select this Workout.

  • Thank you all. This helped a lot!

  • Thanks for the description. I also just switched from polar to the 965 forerunner and have to say.. This heart rate lock was just one single long-press on polar and done.. That's how easy it was.. Didn't even have to look at the watch.. Too bad polar is not keeping up with latest tech regarding screens and chest HRM monitor otherwise they would have an amazing package and would have never switched..
