HRM-Run (red) .. missing data

I've been using the 945 for about a year, and the external HRM since June last year, and all has been working fine. A few weeks ago I noticed that readings were becoming erratic, so I replaced the battery, and all seemed well for a bit, but now I'm getting this strange drop-out behavior.

I wet the sensors before I run always.

I'm puzzled that the HR resumes, but the others don't. Also, the run Cadence doesn't seem affected at all. Aren't all of these measured by the external HRM strap? And if so, why wouldn't all of the data be transmitted? Or stop. I.e., act the same.

Yesterday's 7 mile run looked similar to the 5 mile I show above

I guess I could try replacing the battery with another one, just to make sure the battery isn't the issue, but I'm still puzzled by some of the data resuming, others missing, and others stopping.

I saw some other posts, but didn't find anything conclusive.

  • :-) - i sorta knew the pic would cause some stir :-).

so - basically i gently wash mine by hand after every workout, don't leave it into direct sunlight for drying, don't overtighten the screws, tighten only in a cross pattern, etc. can't tell how the other one was taking care of but was definitely less used than mine. the guy who opened them (an electrical engineer, the macgyver type) said that into one (not mine) water entered through the screw threads due to overtightening and into mine due to normal plastic aging. he also recommended (before the first use) adding an extra layer of sealant on the edge of the hrm just to make sure it's well sealed. these are sealed using ultrasonic technology, but he said even this method is not 100% safe and small gaps between the bonded plastic layers can occur. he also disassembled a hrm ss3 and said that that one is built better and should last longer :-) i've attached some further pics from the surgery ;-). the fried chip from the 3rd one is the one on the left edge and was replaced with one from the other two damaged hrm's. total cost - 25 usd and now a perfect working hrm tri.

  • Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I think I will try replacing the battery first, I'm thinking that perhaps the battery in the belt isn't fully charged (though its new). I think the watch will report HR and cadence without the belt, so perhaps the belt just dies due to low power, and what's left is the watch recording.

Does that seem like a sound hypothesis, or am I overlooking something here? I bought the strap at the very end of June, so I have a bit of time to troubleshoot.

Perhaps it's smarter to report the issue now while troubleshooting so that there's a record of the issue.

  • I wore mine over a long sleeve jacket because it was my same thought. And I changed the battery at forehand. But the heartrate and breathing count are still way off. I use a hrm red. I still  think the cause is the fw update to 4.41.
