Respiration Data during activities

Hello,

in my Garmin Connect i can find "Respiration" as part of my Daily Overview. There I can see respiration data throughout the day - excluding workouts (run, cardio). In neither case I do use a strap (not during workouts and not during the day) and Pulse Ox is turned off.

When my workout, eg a run is displayed, I can see respiration min / max / average - and everything is the same.

Is there a special setting I have to set up to make this a meaningful field for workouts as well?

Thx for your help in advance.

  • Hey everyone,

I think I can clear up the confusion here. Respiration Rate as shown on Garmin devices is provided through analysis of HRV data in search of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). Arrhythmia sounds bad, but this is totally normal and is essentially your breathing coded into the timing of your heartbeats.

The trick here is that to see this phenomenon you need really good data quality. The HRV data your watch can capture with the onboard optical sensor is certainly good enough to do things like stress tracking and capture your respiration rate during most normal, everyday life. This changes, however, once you start getting physically active. For one thing, the sensor can move around a bit on your wrist and also the blood flow speeds up, making it harder to document the precise moment each heartbeat occurs.

To avoid giving you nonsense feedback based on bad data, respiration rate tracking from optical sensor data is turned off for activities.

Respiration Rate CAN be recorded using the same type of HRV analysis during activities IF you are recording your heart rate with a paired chest belt. This is because the electrical signal from your heart beat is much, much easier to recognize with precision (even during physical activity) compared to looking at blood flow beneath the skin.

All of that was to say that you can get respiration rate most of the time from the sensor on your watch, but you need a paired chest belt to track respiration rate during activities.

    Hope that helped.

  • I have a hrm red and am on fw4.41. Since i have the beta installes i don’t have respiration data during excersise (running) anymore. I hope i get fixed in production fw update

  • If you are having issues that you attribute to beta software then you need to contact the beta software team as advised when you download the beta software..

Have you checked the battery in the strap?

  • Thanks Philip for taking time to respond.  I emaild at the beta team and changed the battery of my strap for a new one. But no changes after battery replacement. I’l just wait for the production version of the firmware. Btw it functions with my edge 520+

  • thx, Herman!

That´s clearly understandable for me. :-)

    All good!
