[POLL] OHR plausibility when not exercising

There have been many posts and many reports of innaccurate HR readings from the wrist optical sensor throughout forums of the newer line of devices, however they are not all related to the same issue. Some claim their readings are off in certain activities (such as Hiking), some say their readings are always off, and some only refer to their HR readings throughout the day when working/reading/watching televison or doing house chorse.

I'd like to keep this thread only to HR readings while doing anything that you wouldn't start an activity for - the everyday life. I've created the following poll for this to try and collect what members of this forum feel about their HR sensor in that regard:

  • We need more votes in order to reach any kind of conclusion...

  • Conclusions?  Do you know how many 945's have been sold and how many people would have to reply to this poll to reach any reasonable conclusion?  Even if 100 people replied, that would only be 10% of 1000 watches.  I'm pretty certain more than a 1000 945's have been sold. At best, this poll will only tell you what people who have responded think and not be representative of the 945 as a whole.  The same goes for your duplicate poll in the Fenix 6 forum.

  • I think that in activity 945 is a random number generator! But in the normal life Ohr is reliable, and I like his daily and nightly statistics.

  • You're totally right, it will only tell me at best how a few dozen people percieve their OHR's performance, and what I want to see is if those people are willing to put their perception to the test by providing an OHR vs Strap graph taken during a few hours in a their normal daily routine.

  • I see and I voted.  Slight smile   Outside an activity; taking the examples you gave, all works well.  I've had my watch read in the 130's after chasing my dog down the street.  I've never conducted an "activity" such as running, cycling, hiking, etc without starting an activity.  I absolutely don't see the point in doing so even though this seems to be common practice with a lot of F6 users.  Isn't the reason we purchased these watches is to capture and record all the metrics an activity provides?  It puzzles me why someone would go on a run and not want to record it and gain a true training load/training effect.  To each their own I guess?

I want to see is if those people are willing to put their perception to the test by providing an OHR vs Strap graph taken during a few hours in a their normal daily routine.

Is there a way of using a strap outside of an activity to compare the two?

  • To just compare them momentarily you could just enter the HR widget on your watch, that forces the strap to be used if it's connected.

Otherwise I tested by actually starting an activity (say Treadmill) and using the Auxiliary HR application to record both OHR and strap HR for a full day. I later plotted those on a graph.

  • Been using the watch since September. The OHR is very unreliable.
While sitting in the office it can suddenly go up to 110 and then after few seconds back to rest HR (~50). This happens a lot.

Also during a run it can suddenly change to a whole new "offset" and be higher than supposed to be for few minutes and then back to normal.

Response is very slow if any when doing interval training.

I hope Garmin will fix it because it is very disappointing.
