Sleep monitoring

After more than 3 months of wearing the watch, I am surprised at how little precision I have in monitoring my sleep. To the point that it is not reliable and that can affect other measurements with the body's battery or stress.

I have had fenix5, fenix3, 310xt but before 945 I had the Huawei gt1 and Huawei gt2.

I was surprised by the great accuracy of sleep and stress that watch had, being much lower.

For example:

I'm in bed reading or watching shows one or two hours before I go to sleep. With the Huawei it detected the almost exact time I went to sleep, with the Garmin it detects me when I go to bed and marks deep sleep when I am reading or watching a series. That's what I have manually set the time I sleep. In the Huawei it gets the time right, if I wake up at night for a few minutes even stress when I was more agitated both at night and during the day, with the Garmin it doesn't.

I am aware that these are approximate data but the difference between one and the other clock is important. One thing is approximate data and another is hardly useful because of the big difference. Also the difference between deep sleep and rem, does not coincide with the real thing.

Can anything be done?

Is there any confirmed error?

Are you working on it?

    Not much. You can try adjusting your regular sleeping hours in garmin connect to help the system recognize sleep patterns, and/or you can manually adjust your sleep time for every night that you find incorrect.

    No, at least not in a way related to sleep tracking.

    I've been doing this for years, I'm manually set to go to sleep at 12am and it detects me from 10pm.

    I never thought of this as a failure of precision until I tried other (simpler and cheaper) watches.

  • you activated breathing metrics (24hours) and Spo2 measurement during sleep, since both options my sleep monitoring is really good?

    mostly i go arround 20:00 to bed (watching tv or reading) and arround 21:00 till 22:00 i mostly fall in sleep and stand up at 04:45 for this reason i set my sleeping time to 23:00 and stand up time to 04:45 and it works great

  • I have a 24h sleep, but I go to bed at 22h, and the clock starts to count my sleep from 22h or 22:15, 22:30. What's more, I almost never sleep for more than 50 minutes, even though I sleep for 8 hours and sometimes deeply.
    In the hours that I am reading, from 22 to 24 I identify it as deep sleep and the rest of the night as light sleep or rem, it doesn't make any sense that way.

    How would you know if REM sleep is off since it's just estimating that figure based on averages? To be in a state of REM sleep you have to have rapid eye movement, increased brain activity and slight twitching of your muscles. At best, all the devices you mentioned may detect the muscle twitching.

    Doesn't make a difference. The only purpose of the normal bed and wake times you set up on GC is to switch the watch to 'do not disturb' mode.

  • Does anyone reporting issues with sleep not working also have problems with WHR? I ask this because I can go back almost forever and see that my sleep has been tracked well, or as well as I’d expect. Take last night, sat watching a rerun of Grease (great movie) in a recliner chair until 10pm. Bed at 10:15 then reading to 11 pm. Awake at around 7:30 am then out of bed. Here’s the result. Apart from the few occasions when there have been issues server side, I have no issues with the data I see for sleep tracking.

  • Hello.
    Whr works well all day and night.
    In this picture I went to bed at 10pm and was watching series and reading until 11pm and 50pm. As you can see, it tells me as a deep sleep more than an hour that I have been awake.

    Another problem I see is that it identifies very little time of deep sleep. As I said, in other clocks like the huawei the night sleep is usually between 1:30 and 3h of an 8h sleep.

    I am sorry that such an expensive watch does not correctly identify sleep when other inferior watches do.

    I have not tried other devices but it would be nice to compare them to each other.

    When I wake up it detects it well, because that is when the movement and the pulses increase.


  • I read the latest blog about 945 users and their sleep patterns. While I am cursed like others with inexplicable hours of lying wide awake I had a question but the blog does not encourage any comments? I like many others try and catch a mid-afternoon siesta. I wondered if this is built into this data model.
