FR 945 successor with Sapphire please.

Dear Garmin, can you please offer the next generation FR models with sapphire glass?? Please!

I have had a Casio ProTrek watch over 15 years, and the glass was still as the watch was bought yesterday. Last year I bought a Samsung S9+ with gorilla glass, within 2 days scratches on it. It was under the expectation that gorilla glass is supposed to be very scratch resistant, but it is not ...apparently. The third day I bought  a protector.

Again, dear Garmin, I'm sure you should understand that a 500+ Euro costing watch should not require a screen protector.

Thanks in advance.

  • They already exist. It's called a Fenix.

  • No thanks. I have pristine glass and haven't have any problems with it. If your usage is hard, buy a Fenix which has it. Do not make me pay more for something that I don't need.

  • Sapphire glass is reserved for the Fenix product line, as @ already mentioned. This is due to the fact that the FR product line is not aimed for adventure sports (where rough conditions could result in scratches). I never had any issues with the FR glass when using it for running workouts, cycling or indoor sports. Rock climbing however may sratch the surface, I admit that, but again, that's where the Fenix is targeted.

  • Thanks for the replies so far. My point is NOT to make all FR's more expensive, but why not offering the FR245 successor in TWO options: One for those that want Gorilla glass and one that would like to have a more scratch resistant sapphire glass. There is quite a price difference between the FR245 and the "cheapest" Fenix model with sapphire glass. As Casio can offer watches with sapphire glass for far below $300,-, I cannot imagine why the sapphire option should make the watch $100,- more expensive. But is likely a marketing decision.

I'm not in a hurry to purchase. Currently I'm doing my activities with a HRM in combination with Oregon 750. This combination gives me a very large screen, the accuracy is very good. The downside is I have a device in hand, which is not in all cases the most preferable situation.

  • Yeah man, I've taken my 945 through all kinds of crap - hard trail running, etc... my wife does open water swims with hers.  Both screens look brand new and the watches are roughly 6 months old.  I think the Sapphire glass is an unnecessary expense, personally.

  • you dont even own one, so why this wish? I work with mine in the garden with no scratches... so please go cry to Samsung forums...

  • If you are afraid, there are protectors available for the 945.

  • Oh no, please no. I had a Fenix with Sapphire and I didn't like it. I prefer normal glass (better clarity) + glass protector.

The OP isn't asking for all the successors to the 945 to come with sapphire glass.  I don't see any reason why there shouldn't be a choice. It's a big seller with the F6 and if people want to pay a little more for sapphire on the 945's successor I say let them.  If the 955 comes with sapphire or gorilla glass and you don't want sapphire glass, don't buy it.

  • Not exactly, but there hasn't been any versions of Forerunners based on having sapphire glass or not, so if one would want to sapphire version, it might be good idea to say that, and not "945 successor with Sapphire".

Having too many SKU's it not always smart and economic. And then if the only difference is glass, not really a strong point. In some Fenix models the difference has been like the Sapphire has wifi also and then if you would what wifi, you would need to by sapphire version.

And why just the glass difference?  I would then like the successor to have MediaTek's GPS chipset or something as good as it as it's superior to Sony's. And then there would be 4 versions already and where do we set the limit?
